why are they so popular? Personally I wouldn’t ever get one and don’t see the point in it but what do you guys think about them?
why not ? mine goes well with my dragon
I could say the same for Nautical stars, swallows, etc… It’s preference, and meaning. Plus, any Kanji is awesome to look at (no, I don’t have any though).
people could ask why have an anchor that wasnt done in a shop ….. its all down to personal preference.
thats why we are all individual and unique
thats why we are all individual and unique
I don’t get the anchor comment..
the anchor comment was probably directed at me cause I have one. Understandable, I guess the only problem I have with it is that it’s one of those tattoos people just get to get a tattoo and be cool when they don’t really have anything with meaning to get. No offense to anyone that has one. Also i’ve heard stories about people getting the wrong images tattooed which doesn’t sound like a chance I would like to take. Some of them do like pretty cool though ๐
I have one as well, which is what I didn’t understand about the comment.. As for everyone getting them, I agree. Like I said, same goes for all the “Bros” who get nautical stars and swollows, or whatever.. I have a Nautical star, but I’m prior Navy, so it actually has meaning to me, not just a cool thing to do at the time.. lol..
If you want to get Kanji, I’d go to the source. Ask someone from China, Japan, etc to write out what you want. If you are unsure, check with others..
My feelings it is one of personal and aesthetic tastes.
You could argue that any tattoo has belonging somewhere for example;
Swallows – In the British culture only those in the navy or were merchant seamen would be entitled to get a swallow done if they had traveled thousands of miles. Tended to be on the hands (after retirement) or if still working on the throat just above the collar bones or above each pectoral.
This as right upto the late 1950’s where the teddy boy (rock n roll) broke the tradition and it became more mainstream.
During the 1960’s early 1970’s despite the Navy/Seaman tradition in the USA the blue swallow was adopted as the symbol of the Aryan Brotherhood (White Supremacist group with Neo-Nazi leanings) and many white supremacists or neo-nazis have blue swallows to represent these roots.
My point is that many people would not have a clue about the different meanings of swallows or the various heritages and it does not make them a ;
Teddy Boy
Seaman/woman
Neo Nazi
They do look nice though which is why many get them.
Same with far eastern characters – they look a lot more exotic than english based characters so people will tend to use that which is more visually pleasing.

i remember the time one of my mates decided to get kanji on his upper arm… it was meant to represent “a mothers love” and when translated by another mates grand father it aqtually translated to around the line of “house of woman” well we all know what that means right?
heres a hint….
– I earn big bugs for so little sucks-
-I get my name known but am not famous-
-i am protected but have no gun-…
what am i???
sorry but i just had to throw my little riddle in there. enjoy…
Hi
Just as a side issue I hate riddles – always have and always will it is that smug look the person has on their face when they come up with it and you just want to smash their face in with a brick for giving you something you hate but know you need to find the answer. ๐
In fact I once planned on tossing a colleague over a bannister as everyday they left me a riddle just to watch me suffer… he got wind of my plans and gave up.
Without any googles or books on riddles I will have a go (it is going to be wrong but might encourage others to answer)
A. Tattoo artist – they earn decent money for decent art – other clients spread their name but prob not famous celeb wise, wear gloves for protection.
Or
a tattoo machine – it only draws a small amount of ink and is used to earn a living, names of the machines (or inventor) are often known by artists but not so much by customers, it is often bagged and sterilised for protection and is not called a gun.

lol Mathew your killing me!
refer to my story about the “house of woman”. The answer is staring right at you.
I earn big bucks for so little sucks – …. i will leave this unsaid.
i am well knwon but not famous – …. customers regularly come back for seconds and tell their freinds though i am not internationally known.
i have protection but have no gun -…. Condoms are the choice of protection in this proffession.
Im bad i know but it had to be said. A house of woman can only really mean one thing on my list.
i love it when some people say that tattoo artists earn lots of cash for not a lot of work………..
well if its so easy then why dont they become an artist then.
they only need to take into account the small things like :-
unpaid long hours.. drawing.. cleaning .. etc
drawing skills
people skills
working with something that wont keep still
price of equipment
price of premises
knowledge of safety and sterilisation
health and safety visits
doing apprenticeships without being paid (some are lucky)
fuck me the list is endless…. but i suppose with earning all that money then it must be worth it right ๐ก
and to top it off, some people come up with random shit and riddles ๐
That was a riddle ? i thought he was actually speaking about his mom  kidding ๐
“artists earn lots of cash for not a lot of work” You people say the say about photographers too. ๐ก
To be fair
I did not say that tattoo artists get paid a lot of money for little work.
I stated they get paid a decent price for decent art (this takes into account all the other overheads).
If I thought artists were paid too much I would say so but as it is a tattoo forum I thought it was a tattoo based riddle – which the result justifies my fucking hatred of them.
But saying that this issue reminds me why I am pulling back from forum interaction – explaining through writing rather than in person is a lot of work.

I got my Chinese tattoo because I studied the language for 6 years, and I love the way the characters look. I went into the studio with them drawn out and fully aware of thier meaning. I love my tattoo, because it represents more than one aspect of my life. They aren’t for everyone though.
