So to make a long story short I put a deposit down awhile ago for $60 to a great shop. This thursday I’m getting my first tattoo, it will be a pretty good sized koi on the side of my back and will continue to the middle of my ribs. Initially I was just going to get the outline done, but when I spoke to the artist yesterday he asked me how much I could spend on thursday, I told him $200 and he said with the deposit and $200 he could do the outline and shade in the water. This sounds very reasonable to me. But I’d also like to leave him a tip, and being a student I have exactly $200, and really nothing more. I don’t know how to ask him if he can do $240 worth of work so I can give him a $20 tip. It sounds like a silly thing to ask. What would you all suggest I say? What would you do?
Thanks
i normally tip when the tattoo is completed
you gotta tip us before, during and after ๐
tell them that you only have the $200 and nothing more, once the tattoo is completely finished then you can give them a tip.
not everyone gives a tip so we dont expect one, if your happy with the work and the artist then he/she would love to have a tip placed in their hands…… you dont have to give a lot, even if it is enough for a couple of beers then they will be happy ๐
Thanks for the replies. What Ill probably end up discussing with him is just tipping him more the second sitting, when everythings done, Im sure he’ll be fine with that.
I just have one more question for you guys. My appointment is scheduled for this thursday, but I just found out it suppose to snow pretty hard that day, making it difficult for me to get over there. The artist has an opening on tuesday, do you think it be a good idea to reschedule for this tuesday instead of thursday because of the snow? He told me he’d have it drawn up by my appointment, if I reschedule for tuesday, do you think he’d have enough time to draw it? The earliest I can call is tomorrow because they are closed today.
Thanks
Just call and ask him if he’ll do it.
As to why snow makes a difference, I can’t fathom.
Well the shop is pretty far from me, and its hard to get around with my car in the snow. And it doesnt help that Im really excited to get this piece done.
I wouldn’t discuss the tipping, just surprise him with it all of a sudden ๐
I was a bit light on cash last time I saw my artist, so i brought a 6-pack for him, which he was happily surprised by.
Haha tipping makes it hurt less too ๐
Outlaw – as a tattooist, does tipping make you look after the client more? Not in terms of quality, but priority in terms of booking?
