So I’m wanting to get something that comes up and over my shoulder and down my arm a bit. I was thinking of doing it on the shoulder that I got my last tat on but am not sure if it would blend well or if I should just go to the other shoulder. I’ve thought about dragons and things but they just seem too stereotypical, and I want to come up with something more unique. I need to just find an artist don’t I? The artists I’ve met up to this point don’t seem to have an imagination, and I’m having a hard time giving them enough info since I can’t find anything I like though. What are some other designs that would look good in that area if they were one big design as opposed to smaller pieces? Also it seems that many sleeve style designs are more masculine than feminine….. I’ve found so many ideas that I like, but nothing that fits what I want…. Sorry if these thoughts are really random sounding.

If you don’t have any basis for an idea…I doubt any artist would have any ideas.

What kind of theme are you thinking?
What is the current piece you have? Maybe you could extend on that theme?

I sooo just had a thought…. every idea I’ve had up to this point was line art, or words, or something, and just wouldn’t work for what I wanted…. but, I missed an obvious idea thats always meant a lot to me and people have related to me in their minds and doesn’t seem to be real common…. an ocelot. Have it coming down onto my arm or shoulder or something or maybe batting at a butterfly, I could even have jungle filler or something around it…. You think that would work?

Also, my current piece is in my album… I’m thinking I’d have to use the other shoulder.

Why not have a kitten or something of that nature pawing at the butterfly?

Any tattoo can be feminised take a look at Butterfly’s dragon tattoo.

but a kitten? o_O_by_Shadow_Spine.gif I want something a little less girly lol. Cats are what made me think of Ocelot though.

I look at TONS of pictures, and usually things finally start to jump out at me. I go to BME and look at all sorts of tattoo pictures and see what I like. I go to goole and search flower/animal pics. I’m a bit of a “girly girl” in the sense that I LOVE flower/bird/animal tattoos.

I do however, always have SOME idea when I go in for ink. I usually give a LOT of artistic freedom, but I always go in with several reference pics so my artist has a direction to go in. Heck, I plan to go in and get an awesome calf piece; I am going with “total artistic freedom”, but I will be giving guidelines.

I know you’ll figure something out.:) Thinking a quarter sleeve of some sort may be in my future someday.:)

you can make most tattoos look more feminine by choosing softer colors, colored outlines instead of black, flowers, birds, butterflies, etc.

Ok, I have a concept but I really want to know what you all think…. I am not an artist in any sense but quickly traced/sketched this together from a bunch of pieces. It needs work. It would all be in that Sailor Jerry/Ed Hardy style.

I got the skunk from here but would rather it be a cat… not sure how to draw that though. http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/41PHB1Q-4jL.jpg

the heart he’s sitting on comes from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/920431253173005.jpg

The phrase from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/arms-tattoo-102429.jpg

The stars from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/Kid-s-Name-tattoo-103343.jpg

The swallows from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/draft_lens3732912module24408812phot.jpg and here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/Sparrow-below-between-boobs-tattoo-.jpg

The filler rose from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/old_school_rose_by_JennyPennyPasta.jpg but it needs more filler on that side

The skull from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/Willem_Jansen_2.jpg

The dagger from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/draft_lens3732912module24413072phot.jpg

And spider web from here http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee161/SophisticatedGeek/tat/920431253173014.jpg

The skunk would be centered on my arm/shoulder area, the swallow side would wrap around the front and the skull around the back.

I looked at the one on your shoulder and I think you can do virtually anything with it. It doesn’t need a theme either (in my opinion). Of course my right half sleeve is pretty random but its all filled with stuff that I love and reminders of people I love =]

I think you should do whatever you feel. My boyfriend owns a tattoo shop and he HATES it when people come in and ask him to draw a tattoo but they dont know what they want. Its impossible to do.

I like the heart, its simplistic and elegant. I do believe anything would go.

I went for my most recent consultaion for a half sleeve in January, dragged a few idea in with me off the net, Japanese style, for pheonix…so having ayour own ideas is always a good starting place.

Anyway he made a suggestion if I was up for it, which I was; he is taking new direction with his work and wanted to get away from heavy outline work, I could have said ‘no, keep it tradional’ but went along giving him artiistic licence, and am so glad I did. I have now got an amaxzing pheonix on my arm (doesn’t go all the way around) form my inner elbow up onto my shoulder.

I think basically, what I trying to say is

have and idea of what you want – don’t leave it to the artist
find an artist whose work you like (and trust)
be open to their suggestion
allow artistic licence

I’m so pleased with my latest piece and the fact it looks nothing like any of the ideas I brought in with me in the first place.
