out of these artists, who would you choose for a full back piece? i would like a neo-japanese style theme, but would give the artist super freedom if they wanted it.
– shige (i am on his 2.5yrs waiting list, but i would have to travel to japan from america and also try to catch him at conventions here in america so this would be a VERY long process)

– jess yen (i have a leg sleeve in progress with him. i am a collector so i like to have a bunch of different artists work so i dont know if he would be the ideal choice since i already have work from him, but he is the most accessible artist for me)
– buena vista tattoo club (these guys never come to america so i would have to go to germany to get work done which means this tattoo will be expensive! not as expensive as shige tho. i would also consider doing the realistic trash polka style versus their asian style since its so dope…)

(wont let me link images for some reason)
– carlos torres

– robert pho (i already have an in-progress sleeve with him, but he is a bad ass and all around cool guy. hard as hell to get a hold of him tho since he doesnt have a shop mgr)

thanks in advance for any suggestions!!
I’m sorry I am NO help, but WOW to ALL of them! Holy cow. Fantastic work; seems like you can’t go wrong with any of them!
SHIGE!! If you have any sort of Japanese theme going, I don’t think there’s any question about it! But don’t you have to provide your own translator with him also?
Either way, all of these artists are top-tier I’m sure they would all make an amazing piece…. but I’ll say it again, SHIGE!!, if you have the option.

I get what you’re saying about going to different artists, I like doing the same although for smaller pieces. In my opinion since you’re talking about a multiple session backpiece I think accessibility is very important. Obviously all of the artists you posted are incredible so you can’t go wrong with any but if you don’t want this to drag on for who knows how many years and endless dollars to get completed I’d stay in the states. If it was for a smaller piece then I’d say go to Japan or Germany but for a full backpiece I think cost and accessibility are too important. Pho is great but hard to reach and schedule so I’d lean towards Yenn or Torres. All that said, I think if it was me I’d pick Carlos Torres if he was reasonably accessible since he’s a sick artist and would be new to you and you’d likely have a decent chance of getting this project completed before the others.
I love Carlos’ work and he is a super nice guy. Oh and he travels with a posse and thats cool

i speak fluent japanese and my mom lives a short train ride from yokohama (shiges location) so that isnt an issue. i just dont think i have the patience to wait 2.5yrs to get my back started, let alone finished!
The back piece on Tomo that Shige has done is the business. If only…….
realistic trash polka pics…

spunky is dope, dont get me wrong, but i dont know if i want to commit my whole back to her. i do love that piece she got from gogue tho!!!
speaking of gogue, i forgot to add him and samohin to the list of candidates. one is not taking any new appointments and one lives in croatia… 🙁
One of my favorite shops, and only about an hour from me. The owner, Gabe, runs TattooNow website and hosts a huge convention every year. This helps to draw an incredible, non stop array of guest artists from all over the world. This is where I hooked up with Shane O’Neill last year and I’m booked with Oleg in the fall.
