I read the entire post; I just disagree with some of the concepts, such as it being a poor utilization of space. It’s not poor utilization if there’s nothing else the individual would rather have. Whether or not it lends itself to anatomy (or, at least some parts) is personal opinion. Text is pretty valued as an art form.

A picture is worth a thousand words to the man who cannot read. Again, this is just personal opinion, but the blog takes such an officious “holier than thou” tone, as though everyone who’d get a text tattoo must be a stupid child, and the writer must be a wise, tattooed Buddha. Just my opinion.

The author of the blog isn’t arguing against text tattoos, but rather against “massive amounts” of text. Whether a long block of text lends itself to anatomy isn’t a matter of personal opinion; it’s fact. Where on your body do you have perfectly straight lines? And if you curve the text to flow with the body, the text becomes extremely difficult to read. And if it can’t be read, why get it? We all like different things, but from a practical standpoint, it’s tough to argue many of the artist’s points.

I kinda take flack for not liking text tattoos……….I dont like text because I am in my later 40’s and I have seen 20 year old and older text tattoos………they dont look very good………now I know you all are mostly young, and you dont care, but I just want to say the body changes ALOT, tattoo lines grow, not always evenly along a space, ie one end grows thicker than the other etc,
I just never felt it would be worth doing,
artists plan line spacing and growth in tattoo composition, there is virtually no possibility to do this with text

also I consider you and me VERY unique, there is no one on the face of the earth that deserves to be quoted on my body or yours ………………just my opionion

however, its like the pierced vagina tattoo, if thats what your into, go for it

I immediately had to show this post to my mother and she got a huge laugh out of you thinking late 40’s is old. ๐Ÿ™‚ I sincerely appreciate that. I don’t know if the majority of people on this site would gauge me as “young,” though. (Oddly, I had this exact conversation with a doctor today in an elevator who thought I was a little younger than I was, and he was about your age. Not about tattoos, but about opinion based on appearance and age – He thought I was in my early 20’s.)

I realize I feel pretty differently about text than most people, probably because of my interest in languages and hand-writing since I was a youngster. I see text as a multi-level project. Here’s an art gallery/website devoted to the concept: http://www.textgallery.info/

But, rather than blather on and possibly kill several others and you of bordom, I’ll quiet down and let ‘er go. ๐Ÿ™‚

One of the difficulties I have with large text tattoos is that they are hard for other people to appreciate because they won’t necessarily have the opportunity to read it in its entirity, but that’s a very personal opinion. Not everyone wants to have their tattoos on show anyway and tbh as long and the wearer likes it/appreciates it, who cares.

I liken it a little to large blocks of text on a webpage as I often skim read: they just don’t grab my attention. That being said, I adore Shakespeare and although I doubt I will ever have a text tattoo, there are so many lines of his work I love.

Cardinal makes another excellent point,

GrayCatLove, been real good having you around………..I tend to hang around with artists and friends that arent half my age but not far from it, I usually dont notice the age difference but occassionally notice its there………Im very young at heart, very much a kid, didnt really have much of a childhood maybe enjoying some now? I like todays metal, art, fashion, food…………but yeah, when I start talking about hanging around in street shops in 1979 not too many people are with me

To the rest of this motley crew remeber this, us old collector folk are only here to help, our opinions good or bad are to help,

this artform we love is on a rockets ride to incredible heights in ability, what will be done over the next decade will be even more shocking than the last ten years, with such incredible artwork available to anyone who wants it, yes I think you should grab the best you can get. Sure we all have a funny tattoo or one that isnt exactly a Dali but alot of us are after something a little nicer, ultimately though it is your choice, we are all individuals and life wouldnt be as good if we were all the same

i have text, 2 lines, consisting of 9 words (in my album) on my right ribs, i am quoting no one else, i like the phrase, i like the font, i like the placement, i will be jazzing it up with more decoration when i get the cahones to go back to that rather tender area and i wouldnt have more words than that.

A guy came into my pub the other day with both sleeves full of text, but it was made up of hundreds of different quotes and lines and sayings all in different unrelated scripts, and it looked dreadful, he looked like a walking post it note. I like text, but it does have to be well and properly executed. I dont like 1 word text, personally i think its a cop out, but at the same time too much is just too much. I think at the end of the day do what you’re comfortable with and sod everything else and if that means you cover yourself head to toe in “i love brad pitt” then go for it ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thank you. I need to take a better picture; every single accent is actually a series of three fan-shaped marks. Gotta get someone to come over and photograph it better. I’m a huge Tolkein and languages fan, so I was excited to get it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Please do. As you, I am a nerd and I love the Tengwar, and I am the one who created the Icelandic Tengwar alphabet…. although I doubt anyone really cares or wants to use it other than myself ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
