I am having trouble on deciding on a tattoo artist to do some floral work. I am switching back and forth of which artist to go to. My options are to go to a local artist in Portland who does great floral work, but lacks in realism. The other option is a top notch realism artist that is traveling and I could book a spot with him. I can’t decide who would do the flowers better, the one who in her bio specializes in floral designs, or giving some photos to the realism guy and having him come up with something. I think the Portland artist is better at coming up with a design (given her interest in flowers), but the other artist is a great realistic artist. Any ideas? I’m sure I”m not the only who who has been torn between artists, so any advice is great!
note- I’ve seen the realism artists roses, and they look amazing, however some of his other flowers look the same quality as the local artist I would go to. Unfortunately, I have not seen the local artists roses in black and gray, only her other flowers in black and gray.
Looking at photos, it seems that an artist can do crazy good color roses, but then struggle make the black and gray ones realistic.
I’ve never had to choose but my first instinct would be to book the traveling artist. The other artist will be around for future pieces where the other one would not. You also said something along the lines that the traveling artist might not specialize in floral work but his/her flowers would be of the same caliber as the local artist. It seems as though even if it isn’t his best work it would be as good or better than the local artist. It also matters what is more important to you- having it look realistic or just having a stellar floral piece. Good luck!
you have 2 of the best artists in the world in oregon:
jeff gogue
josh carlton
rachel gilbert out of james kerns studio http://www.nohopenofeartattoo.com/artists/rachel-gilbert/tattoo-gallery
D’Lacie McBride http://www.opticnervearts.com/artist.php?artist=3
Both do good flower work
It would be easier to give you advice if you weren’t making such a valiant effort to avoiding naming the artists.
I agree, Gogue and Carlton are great. Gogue is booked out two years though, Carlton I’m not sure of. Looking at his portfolio, most of his work is pastel looking (although incredible don’t get me wrong). Do you think he could do the flowers without his blur looking style coming out?
The local artist is http://ritualartspdx.com/our-artists/tina-greer/
The traveling artist is Remis, he’s gonna be at Gogue’s studio mid-September. http://www.remistattoo.com

I don’t think you can go wrong with either of those artists for your flowers. I’ve never heard of Greer, but her floral stuff looks good. Solid lines, nice depth and color … Remis has more of a painterly style, but he’s a great artist and I wouldn’t hesitate to get inked by him. So it all depends on which style you prefer.
Appreciate the input from everybody, it definitely helped, as I am an incredibly indecisive person. I decided to hold off from getting it done now. I’m in contact with Joshua Carlton and live about 45 min away so i’m gonna see what he can do for me.
are you looking for b/g roses or color? too bad u missed nate beavers guest spot at off the map. i got a small banger from him while he was there.
also if youre willing to travel i suggest phil garcia. he is killing all the flowers right now.
damn, Phil Garcia is real nice. I’m looking to get b/g because I also want gladiolus flowers and I am assuming it might look feminine to get colored gladiolus, although I think colored roses look great.
I’m assuming someone great at color realism isn’t necessarily good at b/g realism? John Anderton is gonna be at offthemap http://www.facebook.com/johnanderton , he’s got the best color roses I’ve seen..but I don’t know if he’d do the best b/g..I couldn’t find a single b/g rose on his portfolio.

anderton is dope for sure, but i dont think i have seen him do any b/g flowers but i could be wrong. he has done some really dope b/g pieces tho.
I think B/G looks real good, although color might accent my back tattoo well. I’m new to the forum, but I think you can view my back tattoo on my album. I want a rose/or roses with a few gladiolus surrounding my current tattoo.
Do you think going with colored flowers is feminine? If they come across fem in any way, I probably wouldn’t want them. However, reading online it sounds like it’s no big deal as long as they look great.
my opinion is, if it flowers its gotta be color. ive seen some nice b/g roses but apart from roses other flowers look way better in color.
and i looking up gladiolus flowers, they do look a little feminine but i think if you add some more stuff to it to tie everything together it will be fine.
