I’ve seen people talking about finding artists that can draw/create rather than simply replicate an existing image. How do you know if an artist can create something out of an idea, rather than using an existing photo? Do you just look for pieces that look original?
What do you think of https://www.facebook.com/kylewoodtattoo . I’ve been looking for my brother for awhile, and this guy happens to be in his hometown. He also looks like he can create custom pieces. Most of his pieces look nice to me, except not quite the consistency of some of the artists I’ve recommended to him.
Why not go with aaron bell or derek noble in the washington area?
Wow. I LOVE his work!!! Such a nice style.
And consider how much of his work he free hands, there is no doubt he can draw original images!

He likes a neo-traditional look. Derek Noble has way too much horror looking stuff and Aaron Bell isn’t quite what he was looking for either. He really liked Nate Beavers, who will be at the tattoo invitational in Oregon in Feb. However, Kyle Wood seems like a good bet given he’s in his town already. My brother doesn’t have any tattoos yet, and I’m not sure the odds are high that he’ll actually drive down to Eugene for Nate Beavers. Plus, given how undecided on an idea he is I think it would help to have someone he can take time with and come up with a design that fits his goals for the tattoo.
Really nice work:-)
Not sure on distances in the USA but some others I found,

Thanks for the links, I like Peter Koskela the best out of those. I’ll pass the info along.

Some of the guys stuff is great like his flowers but other stuff is pretty mediocre. What is he looking to get? Seattle is a short ferry ride away.
I’ve showed him a time of artist and he likes Nate beavers work the best. So I have been trying to find similar artist. He also wants in black and gray but I’m trying to get him to do it in color.

just curious why you are talking him out of b/g?
Eh I guess I have no need to. I love B/G, but in a neo traditional look I think the color pieces look way better. I like b/g for realistic looking pieces, but I prefer color for traditional or neo traditional tattoos. He’s had all sorts of ideas, but left off talking about getting a rose compass and a sun in b/g, seems kind of plain to me.
He’s also talked about getting a day/night theme, which is why I think he’s best off going to an artist that can work with him and draw up a custom piece rather than two separate images of a sun and rose compass.

I admit I agree with this. While I definitely like nicely done B/G and I’ve seen some nice neo-trad pieces without color I think traditional and neo-traditional styles lend themselves more to looking better when done in color than other styles.
i keep forgetting he wants neo trad. def go with color for neo trad
