This is the work up my friend has done on the back piece of a giant squid attacking a ship I mentioned possibly getting from him.

I am seriously looking for your opinions on this. This is a lot more detailed and much bigger than any tattoo he’s ever done, but he is going to take it serious. I think he can pull it off, but I am looking for any suggestions for improvements. It would be all black and gray at first, possibly tinting the squid itself at a later date.
What do you think of the design? It’s a lot different than the source material linked above, but I think it works. Kind of old-school, classic sailor ink.

As Matthew said tell your friend to practice more on fake skin, you don’t immediately go to the real thing without any experience. BE SAFE infection is no joke
A serious opinion for a serious question:
1.) He can’t draw worth shit. It doesn’t take an equally bad artist to know one, but I am equally bad and I don’t even draw on PAPER.. let alone skin.
2.) He can’t tattoo worth shit.
3.) This think looks like a giant cock, with a ball-sack that has medusa-like tentacles for pubes, slapping the side of noah’s ark. If we ignore the fact that he can’t draw worth shit, the design itself is horrendous and out of proportion.

Do not let him do any more work, until he can draw a duplicate of the cieling of the Sistine Chapel and have it look like a picture. Then he might be ready to start practicing on “FAKE” skin. If he asked for an apprenticeship at a shop, showing that type of work, they would probably kick his ass before throwing him out!!

The honest answer is that often times people are afraid to tell someone they’ve a bad tattoo. It could be simple politeness, a desire not to hurt the other person’s feelings, plain ignorance of what a tattoo is supposed to look like (the main reason kitchen magicians stay in business), or just good old fashioned cowardice.
I mean, if you tell HIM his giant cock squid looks like shit, he may just turn around and tell you your tattoo sucks.

You want a serious opinion on your tattoo design. Well to be honest if you had not already shown the first tattoo done by your friend then I would have laughed it off as a joke on that design.
But seeing that skull tattoo and your feeling that it is not that bad I will run through this with you on a serious note.

The one your friend has drawn is completely wrong in both shape, size, dimension and spacing. That is before I even begin to discuss the lack of shading, texture, forefront and backdrop flow.
IE it is just a very very bad piece of art.
I have studied thousands of tattoos and that is just simply not tattoo material.
I know it has been mentioned but that looks like a giant cock – it really does and if you get that tattooed you will simply become the laughing stock of all who see it.
Should you ever get yourself locked up in prison that tattoo will read – ‘I love giant cock come and get some!’.
