Hey all, I’m new to the forum. Was looking for some advice (which can be seen in the questions forum) about an idea I had for a tat, but now I’m all depressed because I just don’t think it will work.
It’s also freaking me out a little after reading so many posts about tats getting messed up one way or another. On top of that I’ve had 2 smallish tats drawn for 10+ years and have never questioned getting them, I just wanted them. Now suddenly I’m completely unsure. Not planning on getting anything any time soon due to all the uncertainty, but its a total bummer.
Other than that, I don’t have any yet. My first tat was supposed to be my present to myself for graduating college and that just doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon. Though, I have drawn several tats for other people.
So, I’m mostly here to talk to people, get ideas, and was hoping for some magical solution to my size/details problem but no go on that. If anyone finds a wizard tat artist, let me know.
So where do gorillas come into it?
Why not take your ideas to your artsist and you can work it out together-that’s what they get paid for!

Sally Mac has got a point.
First, if your unsure about the art you’ve chosen then the obvious answer is to look for something else. I’ve said this in various ways more than I can remember, but tattooing is a permanant expression of who you are and what you are trying to say about life, living, and in it you express your dreams, desires, frustrations, or just your preferences. It is the most serious thing you can embark on, and if done right, it is the most amazing, wonderful thing.
But that is the key…if it is done right.
So many people just walk in the first studio, hire the first artist, and don’t ask any questions, so while your here, learn what to look for, ask questions about studios in your area, and I’ll be willing to help in whatever small way I can.
A) Yes, any mammal can get inked. I’ve seen three dogs (two on the internet, one in real life) with tattoos, and I’ve heard that horses sometimes get them in lieu of a branding.
Now, the question of whether it’s moral to give one to a nonhuman is really up in the air.
B) Yes, tattoos can fuck you up, look like shit, or even kill you. Ask our most active member Sherav–he just lost a buddy to a bout of hepititis the dude got from some scratcher.
But, if you aren’t an idiot, none of that will happen to you. Sherav’s book is a good place to start to get the basic info on tattoos, and what to look for to avoid getting fucked up. Also, most of us can give you good advice too.
For instance, if dude artist is drunk, he may kill you. ๐
C) If you want design help, it’d be useful to know more about you, what you’re into, and what kind of imagery you like.

Hi
In answer to your first question yes gorrillas (released back into the wild) can and have been tattooed by conservationists during the 1970’s – this has now replaced by microchipping.
With regards to your concerns these are natural – tattooing is a risk and yes it can result in death – my friend was tattooed in a pet shop at the age of 14 because it was a ‘cool and hard thing to do’.
He died of hepatitis and he was only in his early 30’s. I miss him a lot ๐
I was also going to be tattooed by the same guy but figured I would wait fo a pro artist to do the business right.
The things discussed on here are meant to frighten you – not ebcause we are cruel or enjoy it but ebcause we want ppl to realise (as S. Neil rightly stated) a tattoo is a permanent decision.
It should not be taken lightly and questions should be asked and tattooing should only be done by a pro who knows all about sterile technique as well as drawing.
The key part as already mentioned is that tattooing is one of the greatest art forms on earth but get it done right and get it done by a pro and you will be fine.
If you want design ideas we are here to help.
If you have questions on what tattooing is about my ebook is a start – it iis not definitive but will give you a starting push so you are not walking into a studio clueless. (Thanks KH for the bump on it).
You ahev any other questions again we are here to help.
As I hear every otherday from my friends ‘With ink comes responsibility.’
Take care
Matthew
