Do you know about your tattoo history? The Zeis Studio was first opened and operated by Milton Zeis around 1936 in Rockford, Illinois, USA. As an accomplished commercial artist, Milton Zeis ran a small tattoo parlor in the basement of his home. Realizing there was a need for instructional material, Milton Zeis published and sold by mail, monthly lessons on how to become a tattoo artist. As his business grew he began manufacturing his own line of electric tattooing machines and supplying tattooing equipment, including flash, inks, needles and other supplies requested by his customers. Milton would advertise in various magazines of the day and soon orders were coming in from every state in the nation including many other countries; New Zealand, Japan, Australia, England to name a few. Many times orders would arrive from outside the USA addressed simply to ‘The Zeis Studio’ and Milton Zeis would dutifully fill each and every one the next day. Milton continued to offer his skills and knowledge up until his death in 1972. The Zeis Studio continued on through his daughter Joanne Schraiber and her family until 1982. Now in 2009, the legacy lives on with Milton’s great-granddaughter Melissa Schraiber. The Zeis Studio is again growing rapidly and offers clothing, accessories, and flash.
