Hey y’all! I joined the forum a few months back but never properly introduced myself so here’s a little about me: I live and work in Austin TX, love to read, write, and be active outdoors. I’ve always been interested in tattoos but don’t have any yet. I found this forum when I was looking into getting some work done a while ago, but decided I’d wait till my parents finished paying my college tuition before I got any ink 😉
Like I said above, I love to read. The best piece of literature I’ve ever read is Atlas Shrugged, hands down. One of the many many reasons I love this book is that it explained some of the things I’ve always believed but never fully been able to fully clarify myself. This book really helped to pull me out of a slump, one I haven’t fallen back into since, and carries deep personal significance for me.
Therefore, it’s only fitting that my first tattoo be of a dollar symbol. If you haven’t read A.S. and want to know why here’s a link to the passage in the novel that explains it’s significance, which I totally stand behind: http://www.capitalismmagazine.com/economics/money/1826-Franciscos-Money-Speech.html
I’ve been looking around the internet for art and inspiration. These works by Andy Warhol stood out to me because of their originality:

I’d like to start talking to artists in Austin and would love referrals if anyone knows anyone who does exceptional work in the area. I’m not looking for a direct copy of any of this; I don’t even know if that’s possible considering the level of detail. I appreciate any comments/ideas and promise to post pictures of any work I have done.
Thanks and nice to meet y’all.

If you finished the 10000 page Atlas Shrugged you would know that it’s John Galt, not John Gault. This happens to be my favorite book of all time. Keep in mind that Francisco picked the dollar sign because it’s the symbol of man’s mind, his right to produce his own work and his happiness. That said, you will have to explain this to everyone as the dollar sign has taken a different, negative meaning over the past 50 years.

Haha, you’re so right about the spelling, I’ve never been one to remember stuff like that. As for it’s meaning, again, correct. I just love Francisco’s speech from the novel so I linked it. As to it’s other “meaning” f$$$ the looters, they can think that it means whatever they want. If anyone asks I’ll give them the short and sweet answer, that it’s a symbol for man’s productivity, and recommend that they read Atlas Shrugged.

Good stuff.

I keep coming back to this idea in my head. I feel like there is a better way to do it than just the dollar sign. If you are open to suggestions AND you want a medium sized plus piece of art on you here’s a suggestion:

What if you did Atlas, the man who held the weight of the world on his shoulders, holding up a rounded, giant dollar sign instead of the world. You could really make this pop as a piece of art and if you found the right artist it could be an EPIC tattoo.

I am totally open to ideas, especially one like that. That sounds fantastic! Before I was trying to find more interesting versions of the dollar sign, but this is way better! I need to talk to in artist… I wish I was better at drawing. I’ve got a sweet image in my head right now of this done in a Shephard Fairey-esque propaganda style, in shades of yellow, red and black. Thanks for the great idea!
