Are Miami Ink, LA Ink and London Ink each truly in a league of their own (being top of the line tattoo studios that are taking the tattoo world by storm) or are they each just your typical tattoo studio, but with the only difference being that each was lucky enough to get a TV series?
Hi
The argument has too many variables for a straight forward ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
First of all by ‘typical studio’ do you mean that all artists are of an equal quality or skill – whether I like all of their work or not many of the artists shown in these programs were picked because of their artistic skills.
I have been to Miami Ink and High Voltage on my tattoo tour across the states where I took in over 50 studios and their work. I will be honest their work was damn expensive but shit hot work.
My findings (my opinion) were that there were maybe 15 artists who would equal (or even excel) those that are seen on these programs. However there were many that were average to plain shite.
However….
The key part of your question is what makes them different is the marketing – TV shows want to make money and get a stack of viewers which is why they carefully chose the ppl they show.
They did this on not only talent but on the fact that they could be considered hot/sexy/dangerous/fun and therefore will pull in more viewers.
Also with regards to London Ink as an example they tattoo a lot of ‘celebrities’ which again is both tattoo and TV marketing.
These factors have put them in a league of their own – not necessarily through artistic skills but through media exposure and good marketing.
