So, I got a medical tattoo to cover over a light-colored birthmark I’ve had since birth…it was just supposed to be brown to match the rest of my skin. I followed instructions I read online, kept it covered, didn’t scratch it, applied the right amounts of Aquaphor etc….Well, yesterday I was changing my bandage and noticed that most of the tattoo had peeled off, revealing pink skin underneath. Needless to say I was pretty shocked and dismayed.
So…has anyone had this experience, and if so, what was the result? Will I be going back for a retouching later, or will the brown magically reappear? I’d really appreciate your answer because I’m freaking out over here.
Hi
First of all don’t panic about it. That just leads to needless worry and illness.
When you say peeled it off is this the scab which is supposed to flake away or are you saying that the ink has lifted from the skin?
Also when you get a tattoo you should let it breathe after the intial bleeding has stopped.
My advice is keep it clean and uncovered. Once the skin settles you will be able to see if the ink has taken – if not I would suggest that you wait until the skin has fully healed and speak with a decent and experienced tattooist to get it reshaded. They can always rework the area again.
Do not keep tight clothing or bandages over the tattoo as this can rip the scab which lifts the ink out.
Good Luck
Matthew
The scab formed and then flaked away, revealing a pink mark with brown-colored pores…it’s become less brilliantly pink in recent days, so we’ll see what the final product looks like. Do you think it’s okay to put cocoa butter on it right now?
It’s hard to say and I’d suggest that you show us a picture so that we can better assess the situation.
How many days in are we? And how long did you leave the bandages on your tattoo?
Basically what I’m trying to say is… you’ve not given us enough information.
I’m trying to imagine what is going on. In my head it sounds like the result of constant saturation over 3 or more days. I can’t imagine anyone would be daft enough to do that though so pic needed.
