I got my first tattoo 5 days ago, the start of a full sleeve. It’s healing fine, I’m following all the aftercare instructions I was given, having no problems at all.

However, my band is playing an open air gig in about 2 weeks. Should I keep it covered, or will it be ok to use a high factor sun protection lotion on it? If so, is there any particular brand/factor that is recommended? It will only be exposed to the sun for about 2 hours maximum.

    Hi Puzzles

The tattoo should have settled by this time but sunlight should be avoided on tattoos if at all possible as it knackers the ink up.

If you do go for a high sunscreen it is not so much the brands as to what they can do.

They should be UV and UB screening.

At least a factor of 30 – I would suggest 45 for very hot or direct sunlight – once you go over this the effect is minimal.

Is it water resistant? Sweat breaks down the coverage and if you are up on stage it is gonna be hot.

Reapply every couple of hours at least.

Do not go for the tanning sun lotion – the dye will mess with fresh ink.

    Hope that helps.

    Take Care
