Hi there. I’m new to these forums, and I got a tattoo five days ago and was wondering when I should switch from using ointment on it to lotion. I was also wondering if anyone has an opinion on Neutrogena SPF 15 Oil-Free Face Lotion? It says on the back of the bottle that it is fragrance free, hypoallergenic, alcohol free, and won’t clog pores. I’ve tested it on my face several times and found it to be a very effective moisturizer. Its active ingredients are Octinoxate, Octisalate, and Oxybenzone. I’m not going to start using it until I know it’s safe for my tat, and if anyone could recommend a different lotion if this one is dangerous please do so. My username is Nadaud, and I thank you for your time.
not to sure about that, maybe others will know, i found with myself Niva moisturizer works the best..or nappy rash cream. hope this helps a little bit 🙂 im guessing it also depends on your skin type too?
for the sake of spending a couple of £ or $ on the propper lotioon then i wouldnt even bother taking the risk of fucking up the tattoo.. 😉
Hi
That stuff contains Benzophenones (usually benzophenone-3).
The thing with this stuff is it can be used to block UV but when it breaks down it can cause DNA damage and encourage the production of free radicals in the body.
It is thought that too many free radical cells can contribute to cancer although they have yet to estb a full link between Benzophenones and major damage once absorbed into the skin.
I would advise using a different lotion until fully healed and then use this stuff with care.
Take care
Matthew
Thanks for the helpful comments. Unfortunately, I did start using the Neutrogena on August 19, 2009, and though it doesn’t appear to have caused any damage to my tattoo such as fading or anything, the cancer issue does worry me, so I’ll probably switch lotions soon. I had my tattoo checked out a few days ago by a local artist and it appears to be very healthy, peeling a lot at this stage and no warning signs such as ink bleeding out or anything like that. The Neutrogena hasn’t caused any sort of reaction with my skin, such as pimples breaking out or anything like that, but I’ll be glad to keep all of you up-to-date as to the progress of my tattoo.
