What are some ways of making reasonably sterile ink at home? Can one just use pen ink? I know in prison they use ash among other things (can one just start a fire, let it burn out, and use the ash?)

I am not looking to do some big elaborate design, but I want to give myself a few tattoos, it’s the whole self infliction thing, whatever.

Any suggestions of ways to make good ink, or a good location to find good cheap ink, would be much appreciated. I’m not necessarily worried about the quality of this ink either, though it would be good if it sticks. A lot of these are going to be places like on the balls of my feet, or small symbols around my chest or upper arms. Thank you. 🙂

Yeah, but I have no tattoo gun, so I didn’t know if that would still be a good option or not.

I want to do this for several reasons. While I plan on getting many intricate tattoo’s in my lifetime (I’m actually currently planning a trip to Hawaii to get a traditional native tattoo) I’m also into branding and scarification. I believe that a self-inflicted tattoo will have meaning that the others do not, even if it’s not the greatest looking. This is definitely not on a whim, and it’s not a fleeting desire of mine, it’s deep rooted and important to me. 🙂

my first tat was with india ink from a print shop. i used a needle with thread wrappped arouind it to set the depth. pretty crude, but turned out o.k. they’re covered up now though.

I’m confused by what you mean. You dipped a thread in ink and basically stitched yourself? Or you just made stabs with the thread and ink wrapped around the entire needle?

I’ve thought about doing the stitch thing, though, that would be extremely painful. I’m cool with brands and scars and different things, and I think I would be up for it, but I wouldn’t be able to do it myself. As for the other option, that sounds like a good idea, but I don’t know how I would make the thread stick to the needle very well.

Part of the point of wanting to do something different is the desire to NOT use tattoo ink, so if I can avoid traditional methods, then I will. That was why I inquired about the ash thing, I have heard about it being used, but I wasn’t sure.

Thanks for your replies guys, they’re much appreciated.

stabs. the thread left about a thumb nails depth, so i dipped it then did the sticking part. you have to draw something first of course. simple stuff , mine was a spade, then i did a small cross on my wrist. it really didn’t hurt nearly as bad as when i got them covered professionally. 😀

That’s because cover ups hurt a lot more than new tattoos because you’ve shot all the nerves underneath the first tattoo you got.

actually it’s because a machine is stabbing so many more tims per minute. the home made tats were very small. it wasn’t shot nerves for sure.
