Hi, I’m considering getting my first tattoo and would like to hear people’s opinions, advice, etc. My idea is to get the phrase, “Learn from Yesterday, Live for Today, Hope for Tomorrrow,” because that is basically my outlook on life. I would also be getting this phrase translated into Irish and use the translation for my tattoo. My big issue is placement. I really like the idea of getting a side tattoo, but I’m worried that may be too feminine. Any thoughts? If I were to get the tattoo on my side, I am unsure whether to do it in a long, slightly curvy verticle line, or my other idea was to have three smaller horizontal lines up higher on the side sort of like a poem. Please let me know your opinions, thoughts, ideas, all is welcome!

    Hi Blainer

So you are getting a tat in the language of kings – good stuff 😎

It really is down to the caligraphic style of the writing gaelic is very flowing (almost like elvish in that respect) and I personally would have it as a swirling line (but that is just me)

Placement really depends on how much you want to keep it covered – across the ribs means that you will pretty much be able to wear anything to keep it covered.

I have seen them across the collar bones – but again think carefully with work issues as may not be as easy to cover.

The shoulder blade is also a good spot for flowing script, but again leaves it open for display on open back dresses.

If you go for the ribs dont get it all bunched up but try and spread it outwards is my opinion.

Let us know how you get on and can’t wait to see it.

If you are going for lettering down the side be aware that this area is probably the most stretched and dificult area of the body to keep inline, to scale with itself etc. Also when being tattooed, stay in the same position the entirity of the session or the lettering will not be the same, your work could end up considerably different from word to word. This is also one of the worst areas for distortion when you put on and lose weight.

Hey, thanks for the input so far. Sherav, dresses wouldn’t be problem considering I am male and don’t typically crossdress haha. And the fact that the tummy area is subject to a lot of change is one reason I am wary of getting a curvy line down the side. Would I have the same problem if I did it on the side of my rib cage below my armpit?

    lol my bad sorry 😮

I just wandered in dunno I took Blainer as female – just goes to show I should check before I type.

You dont tend to have much change on ribs – well upper part but as scrubmuncher stated it can be a hard part to tattoo so make sure they get it lined up right.

Ok before I dissappear back into my pit of embarrassment – good luck with the tattoo!

The rib side under the armpit is where I was talking about, it is a real nightmare area to tattoo with script and you will not get a good lifespan from it. Just pen some lettering on yourself, get a pal to put something on all same size, and have a look. You’ll get my drift.
