For sentimental reasons, I have started thinking seriously about getting my first tattoo.
What I really want is a blackbird in flight, but it’s been hard finding good pictures as references.
Here are my two favorites of those I’ve found so far:
Most of the suggestions I’ve gotten have been to pick some other bird tattoo and have it colored black. That would be an easy option, but it’s not what I want. I specifically want blackbird, not just any black bird.
My questions are these:
Where would be the best place to put it? My main concerns are aesthetics (obviously), discretion (in case I ever need to cover it up), and the distortion that occurs when skin ages or weight is gained or lost.
How do I go about getting a design made/drawn?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The pictures you picked are pretty nice, did you want more pictures?? Why would you ever need to cover the tattoo? Do not get the ink done unless you are sure about it. What size were you wanting to go? Sorry for all of the questions but you need to be more specific. Generally speaking, your ink shouldn’t get distorted but it does fade. It is recommended to have it reinked every 10-15 years.
Your artist should be able to draw your design for you if you print off pictures to show him/her. Then be as descriptive as you can with how you want it. After all, it is your skin we are talking about here.
Finally, if you decide you are ready for a tattoo, read our after care and treatment section of the forum to educate yourself on how to keep yourself healthy.
Thank you for your response, and the questions are quite welcome. If you happen to find any pictures that you think would work especially well as a tattoo. Because I’m still uncertain about so much of this, I’m planning on waiting AT LEAST the seven months until I turn 18. My parents are in full support of the idea, but they agree with me that I need to give it quite a bit more time and thought.
I’m not sure exactly in what situation I would need to cover it, but I would like to have it as an option. As for size, I’m thinking five inches or so from the highest to the lowest point. I’m also a pretty small person so that may have to be adjusted depending on how it looks and where it goes.
I also just realized I phrased the beginning of my first post oddly. “For sentimental reasons, I have started thinking seriously about getting my first tattoo.” isn’t exactly what I meant. The blackbird is what’s significant and sentimental, not the tattoo itself.
I’m not sure if that was excessive or not, but I thought I would play it safe.
I completely agree about working closely with an artist to get it perfect, especially because it would be my first tattoo, and I don’t want a bad experience to put me off tattoos forever. I just think they can be so beautiful and are such a special form of expression. My main issue is that I have no artist to work with currently, and don’t know how to find one.
If you have any answers or feedback, I would be so thankful.
Ii could still really use some advice

Hopefully you like some of these I found. Sorry for such a delay I’ve been very busy.
thank you!
Can’t add to the help D has given you, I was about to go looking through deviantart myself until I saw all her links! But I did notice something – you said you might want to cover it up, and Demure thinks you mean cover it up with another tattoo if ever you grow to dislike it – did you mean cover it up with clothes or was D right? Anyway, good luck on finding the perfect design, and kudos on wanting to wait, too many underagers out there rushing to get tattoos on whims and ending up regretting it!
Oh and also, as for placement and distortion, are you male or female? If female, avoid your stomach in case you have children. Some people are lucky but others are not so much! As you’re young your weight will likely fluctuate to some extent over the years, but anywhere on your back is a pretty safe bet. A lot of people would get that on a shoulder blade, that seems to be the most popular place for birds, which’d look pretty nice, but personally I think I’d have it central back at the top, but then I have a thing about centralness! (if that’s a word!) And if, by cover, you did mean cover with clothes, you’ll have no trouble with that if it’s somewhere on your back – the main thing to consider is job prospects, but you’d easily hide a back tattoo and hidden ink doesn’t matter 🙂
