I originally came up with a tribal style dolphin tattoo design two years ago, I’ve reworked the design numerous times now, most recently on Photoshop (for the cleaner lines). I have not yet booked an appointment, but I did talk to one local tattoo artist whom I know a fair bit about, he does really good work. I’ve had him look over the design, he says it looks good- although he suggested i might try and make the blue lines look more “watery”…
so, here’s the design I’d showed him (first photoshop version):

And my attempt at making the blue lines look more watery (essentially, the blue lines now have lighter blue surrounding them, not the most watery look ever… but I like it):

What do you think? Is the design in general good, is the more “watery” look okay/possible to achieve in a tattoo? Any changes I should make? It’s supposed to go down my side, for the record. I realize this is one of the more painful places to get a tattoo but I’ve always loved side tattoos.
any thoughts/opinions appreciated
only one thing: awww how cute
looks awesome =]
I really like it. I think it looks cute, and I love tribal animal designs for some reason. I’m thinking he was talking about possibly reworking the lines to look more like waves & water? I personally like it how it is, and if you are thinking of making those lines blue like in the pic, then it will translate into people’s mind as water. At least it would for me. lol.
Hi
Nice design which i like but I will suggest a couple of things because I really want you to get the best you can from it.
This is constructive criticism and is not meant to bag on your design
The first thing that struck me is the top of the head – with the curl across the top of the head it looks like it has a torn blow hole.
I would personally shorten it just a fraction to depict the ‘dip’ where the blow whole is. This is because the dolphin is under water so the hole will be sealed.
The second thing is I would make the eye slightly more distinctive as that is the key attraction of these mammals theirs eyes show a lot of life and intelligence.
It will also help to avoid blurring later on in the life of the tattoo.
You can always add more coral reef (even in a tribal style) or tribal fish running through the water.
Looks great though.

i think its a very sweet design , im not normally a fan of tribal but thats real cute
Yeah, I think that’s what he was talking about, making the lines smoother and more fluid. That being said, they look like water as is to me lol… glad someone else thinks so, too.

No worries, I was looking for constructive criticism. I can see what you mean with the eye, I’ll work on trying to tweak it a bit. However, I’m not totally following you with the blowhole comment, mostly because I know a few people who have looked at and weren’t sure which line was supposed to be representing it. Probably just an issue understanding on my half.
Hi
That is what I mean – where the blow hole should be is just a long line. :p
You could move the line further back along the skull and mark an area for the blow hole (it will be closed as below water)
Post up your tatt when done will look sweet.

Okay, I changed the eye a bit, I do agree it looks better with more expression (though I may play around with it a bit more)… the blowhole I’m still not sure what to do with. I circled it in red (the somewhat squarish shape in the center is it). I also realize it’s too high up on the head, if one is to get technical… as it should be above the eye, more or less, and the shape changed. I’m kind of tempted to leave it since i don’t mind it and am not sure how abouts to change it… but if anyone had any suggestions on what to do I’d be happy to try them.

Hope I’m not becoming a bother, thanks for any further thoughts/comments.
