    I got my latest tattoo on Saturday. (You can see the pictures posted in the Inked Skin forum in the post titled, “My daughter’s butterflies.) In the past I have used A&D ointment for aftercare, but the artist who did this one strongly recommended that I use a foam-like product called H2 Ocean that I have never tried before. With my previous tattoos I have had very, very minimal scabbing, but with this one it is starting to scab. I am following the directions that came with the H2 Ocean.

    Is scabbing normal with this product? Should I continue with the H2 Ocean like my artist recommends, or go back to A&D ointment? I really like my new tattoo and want to take good care of it.

    Thanks in advance for any advice or opinions.

    My tattoo artist buddy pushes that product pretty hard–apparently it has a nice profit margin. Either way, every tattoo heals differently so it’s not for sure the H2 Ocean doing it to you. Personally, if the A&D worked for you in the past I’d have stuck with that.

    Hi

    I checked the ingredients and there is nothing in it that should react very badly with the tattoo unless you have uber sensitive skin but that would have also shown with the A&D.

    The scabbing is likely because the artist has worked the area hard and gone quite deep. I am a heavy scabber on my ink which is an irritating thing but as long as you keep them clean and don’t pick they should be fine.

    If you are having no joy with the foam I would suggest changing back to the previous cream or do the following;

    Revert back to A&D for most of the tattoo and do a test section (just a small edge) with the foam and see how they heal in comparison.

    If the foam is not kicking it then fully swap to the cream.

    Take care
    Matthew
