Wow, that’s a tough-one! My only guess would be a sun in yellow & orange (would look nice with your back peice) and have the outisde of the sun done in black shading.
Good luck.

Take a peek at my photo album. I have a full Japanese sleeve (right) and I have a pagoda on my right forearm, I also have Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave’ on my right inside bi-cept and lot’s of Cherry Blossums for fill-ins. But I also have a Dragon, a Samurai & a Geisha too. Maybe you can add some Japanese birds into your sleeve. I’ve seen some really nice flowers, like the Iris, Louts, Chrysanthemum, etc..
This is kind of cool
Good Luck,
Dave…
I’m just going to make this quick & simple. I like Tattoo’s, on woman too. I will give the old saying ‘It’s YOUR body, do what You want” but I also know that can be hard, if your fiancee dosen’t like them. It’s not always easy jsut to say , ‘I’ll do what I want’ sometimes. But Thank-God my wife let’s me do what I want with my body. She has Always been there to support me and I do know it means EVERYTHING to me that she does. Would I give her up for my body ink, VERY touch question. Luckily for me, I dont’ have to make that choice.
Im my opinion, I would say, GO FOR IT. Ink can be Extremely sexy on woman 😉
Dave…
Yes, I agree. Very different and kind-of cool looking. Does she plan to add onto it?

Dude, if you only had it done 2 days ago, give it a good 4-6 weeks to heal-up. I have to full Black & Gray sleeves and black work looks Much darker when new. Once it’s healed, then you’ll have a better idea of how it looks. So far, it looks pretty noce to me. Do you have a copy of the original work so we can compare it too?
Dave…
Although I hate to quote someone else:
“very beautiful……. and the tattoo is nice as well :D”
I have to Totally agree, it fits your body lines very nice. Sometimes this is over-looked and a nice design & artwork just doesn’t come out as nice, if the placement is not right. Thumbs-up to your artist!
😉

Mat, not sure if this interest you at all, but this just popped into my head when reading your Dad’s likes.
How about something like a Saxophone playing, and out of the Sax it’s blowing bubbles. Each bubble coming out of the Sax is getting larger & larger. Inside each bubble is something different. You could have music notes in 1 or 2 of them, then white anemones in 1 or 2, maybe a few small animals in 1 or 2 and the largest top bubble would have a heart in it, maybe with your Dad’s name on a ribbon around it. Of course, for the details I see (in my head) it would have to be a good size piece. It would make a cool back piece. I see the top bubble about 3” in diameter. If you didn’t like the Saxophone idea, it could be a radio and these things are coming out of the speakers. I think you get the idea.
I lost my Dad 3 years ago and now have 2 memorial pieces. The 1st one for me was very easy. We both were in the military and I’m the youngest & only one in my family that followed Dad‘s footsteps. So my 1st one is on my right ribcage. It’s my skin torn open, my heart showing and Dad’s dog tags hanging around it. My 2nd one was easy too. It’s my Dad’s portrait on my left ribcage of him in 1952 @ 20 years old. I feel your pain and yes, the tattoo’s do help in the healing process. Both of my memorial pieces were done on the same calendar day I lost my Dad (1 year apart) and I was on the table getting inked during the time-of-day Dad took him last breath. Something Personally I want to do.
Good luck with your design & healing.

Might I ask why you wouldnt advise it ? Im not doubting your knowledge as I dont have any tats yet but just curious as to why its not a good idea.
As far as the theme for it I have been going back and forth for soo long. I see/have ideas all the time then it changes then I see something else and it changes again. How do other people come up with the design of there whole sleeve ? I know im not huge into a lot of bright colors, probly just some shading with the odd bit of red to make certain things pop.
This is Exactly why I too, wouldn’t recommend a full sleeve for your 1st tattoo. Not trying to be a hard a$$ here, but if you can’t make up your mind now as to what you want (for the rest of your life) then Dont’ start this big. However, if you do have a ‘general’ theme in mind (like Japanese style) then start out with something smaller that be added into later. I do find that most peolpe who have put alot of thought & time into wanting alot of ink, dont’ change their mind after the 1st one. BUT, there is Always that small possibility that aftet the 1st one, you may find it’s not for you. Then going small for the 1st one, isn’t so bad. Plus, if I’m asked for my opinion about this subject, I recommend your 1st one, higher-up near the shoulder. That way, if you decide not to continue, it won’t show everyday to the world. Although I have 2 full sleeves (and more) I started with both shoulders, then chest, back, then legs Before I went onto the lower parts of my arms. Not that I didn’t know I would be full sleeved someday, I just wanted to have my career in-place before society decided for me. Although today, things have changed alot and more-n-more people tolerate heavily tattooed people and we’re not considered criminals, I still would hold off getting my lower arms done for a while. Again, this is just 1 mans opinion, nothing more.

Mathrew, no problem. I too understand that answering the same old questions get old. I also know that some will just come in, seeking the quick answer & then never come back. But how do we know their true meaning? I mean, most of those who ask the (what may seem like simple) questions that using the seach function will net you Tons of answers / post, but also these are usually the newbie’s that don’t even know how to use the search button. If 1 of their first post (may seem like) are a put-down, then maybe that’s why they don’t come back?
Sure, I’ve read many-a-post and thought to myself, just use the dam search button. And then I don’t answer the question either and just move on, but that’s not really helping anyone either. So I try to answer, if I have the time, whenever I can. Although I don’t post alot, being here for more than a year, I do like to come in and read alot. Usually it’s right afer I’ve gotten new ink, it brings me back in here.
I’m not trying to slam the Mod’s here, really. I’m just 1 voice / opinion. Maybe I’m having a bad day?
I’ll behave, please don’t banned me.

For me personally, I like the Kanji symbols better than just straight English letters for MY tattoo. I got mine (Family) after my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I also understand it’s not for everyone. I remember sitting in a bar one day and the guy next to me, sparks up a conversation about tattoo’s. At first I thought he was just making conversation and being kind-of cool about it, but then I started to get ‘That’ feeling. He started on about ‘Why do people always get Chinese symbols on them. I mean White people. Why can’t you just get English letters” So I started with ‘well for me, tattoos and the Chinese culture, bla, bla, bla…” Then he stops me and starts telling me why He doesn’t like it. His Father & Grandfather , Great Grandfather, fought in the wars, against the Chinese, bla, bla, bla… Then I said “Hey, I was in the service too, I did my time. My daughter has just joined the service as a Police Officers too, so what’s that have to do with anything. I didn’t, nor did you fight any Chinese. Shit my father did 20 years in and was shot-up in Korea too, but that too has Nothing to do with my tattoos.”
Well then he started to get a little more angry and that’s when I say dude, let’s just end this entire conversation Now, before shit gets out-of-hand. He stopped talking for a few minutes, kept drinking and then said your right, you’re probably a cool guy and I should just shut-up before I get into trouble. Then he left. This is exactly why sometimes, when asked about my ink, I just say very little. You never know where it’s going to lead too. To each his or her own, right. Get what you like, for whatever reason you want.
As I once read, “Respect for one’s Parents is the highest duty of civil life” Great saying.
FYI, I have a full (right) sleeve all in Japanese / Chinese style. I have my full (left) sleeve done in Hindu style. Why, because that’s what I like and each tattoo has a personal meaning to ME.
Enjoy life!

I would say 3 days is fine. Shouldn’t hurt to cover (bandage) it up during your training and then remove afterwards.
Personally, I’m always dumb-founded by the above response to questions posted on the boards. I’ve always taken the old-school approach of “the only dumb question is the one not asked” yet when someone does ask (no matter how many times it’s been asked before) instead of giving the simplest & quickest answer to the question, people are put-down and told to basically “find it yourself”. I’m twice-as-surprised to see this coming from a Moderator.

Very nice piece of work. Congrats.

Well, as I’m sure others will say, ‘Everyone’ is different. Just like different areas of the body, feel different (pain levels) that is. It’s been a long time, but I don’t really remember the calf being that bad. For me, the arms and even the insides (full sleeved) are nothing. Now the sides of my ribs is a different story. Although I can take it, I will admit its Not a nice area to have work done on. As stated above, bring some good music and headphones to take you away from the shop and you’ll be fine.
