My view is – if you wouldn’t hang it on your wall why would you have it on your skin?
Get a stunning artist to draw something up that means the same thing (in your head) and then live the rest of you life with something beautiful that you’ll never regret. Even if you decide to change the meaning of it later in life.

I’d second Tutti at Black Garden. A girl I know has a half sleeve from him and it’s gorgeous.

Like others have said, it’s never too late to start and your reasons for getting one sound well considered and solid so you’re doing the right thing. It’s like I keep telling my sister and my 18 yr old daughter – it’s not why am I getting tattoos, it’s why not? They’re for me and I want them.

Ha! Yeah, I’ve been lurking on here and a couple of others for a while. Just enjoying the tattoos and learning as much as I can.
