yeah see, ive done this shit for years and gotten no-where, the parlors Im trying for (even the pretty shit ones) wont even look at a folio, let alone talk to people about jobs.
yeah all that is listed on my Resume already, I’ll transcribe what ive written so far for a covering letter to a specific shop –
Dear Mr . -shop owners name-
My name is -My real name here- and I am contacting you today to show an interest in any apprenticeship placements or front of shop staff vacancies you may have open in the near future.
Your details were passed onto me by -Other owner- of -Tattoo shop- in -My home town- after I questioned him about an apprenticeship. He informed me of your name and shop after viewing my portfolio, he mentioned you had recently opened your business and that you two are on good standing and I have since been watching your shops Facebook page and I would like to applaud you for such raw artistic talent.
My love for body modifications came at a young age, seeing my ‘punk-rock’ mothers tattooed and pierced friends and they would tell me storied of how they came to be and I was instantly hooked. I started drawing felt tip tattoos on my friends and charging 10p an image when I was 8. Since then I have educated myself in many of the different styles and artists throughout the industry, now at the age of 24 I wish to start my career as a tattoo artist.
I have worked prior in two well known tattoo studios, one during my high school work experience where for four weeks I helped front of shop in -Name of tattoo studio- which is a well reputed and loved studio in -town- whereas my peers were working in the likes of schools and libraries, I knew even at such a young age my calling was here. The second and most recent studio I worked for was -Studio Name- again a well known and respected studio in -town- where I worked as Saturday front of shop staff, dealing with booking and assisting customers with pricing, placement and aftercare, as well as using sterilization equipment and the general housekeeping of the shop for 9 months, until financial restrictions meant the shop going into new hands.

And that’s all I have so far.

I know nothing about this subject but I know what I would do. I would go to each shop myself if possible.
Yes I do that, there’s a few nearby i have not tried yet and all of the others ive just went in myself with my folio. Never really a CV or covering letter….
Ok I will do that then, tbh this is a mix of a lot of stuff I have drawn many of it is not what I show people, but i will know for future refrence not to put them in. I have taken art classes, I have taken partical courses in your basic art and design college course and a HNC (i think it was) in Illustration, I’ve got my fingers crossed the now for getting into a HNC of fine or contemporary art. As far as stuff like life drawing classes or small like hour things in the community ican’t afford it at all. I’m very poor hah.

Your drawings are good, i don’t think you will struggle to get a apprentiship! just don’t give up!
Oh if only this were true!
I’ve been trying since I was 18… I’m 24 now… And it still doesn’t look hopeful but I’ll keep on going till I get where I want to be!
thank you very much ArniVidar.
This is exactly the sort of stuff I am looking for in comments! Once I get some more paper in Ill re-do the pieces in question and some sheets dedicated to lettering, and human anatomy.
I’d love my work to be ripped apart even more really get into the nitty and gritty of it, it’s one of the best ways to learn in my opinion, I’ll upload whatever I do to this thread so it’s not sprawled all over the place!
Ill re work the guitars it’s one thing I’ve never been good at and I draw them often but I can never get it right =/
Thanks.
Hands are horrible to draw, i cant fucking stand them! that one took me like 5 hours to draw and it was done like 7 years ago, I dont think ive drawn many realistic hands since hahahah!
The guitar is Frances Bean Cobain (well it’s meant to be) and was inspired by Lora Zombie’s Curt Cobain water colour, you should really check her out if you like the grungy smeared, smudged look. She has a book out I believe and lots of videos on youtube.
The zombie one is the most recent save from the two little ones at the end, and was really just a fuck around that I finished but I really like the zombie hands I drew.
Thank you for your input, however untrained an eye is your opinion still matters =)

To be perfectly honest, it didn’t mean enough to you as you picked the wrong artist for the job.
Can’t stress enough to do your research before selecting someone, post on here to get artist recommendations.
^this.
I waited 4 years before I got my 1st tattoo because the meaning behind it was so dear to me, although I went to a (licensed) friend to get it done I knew that he could pull exactly what I wanted off as he had known me for 10 years, that did not stop me from rigorously researching artists in my area and as far as I could possibly travel however.
In my short time in working in a parlor I seen some horrific desgins people have on them due to the fact they did not research, they didn’t know how or they just weren’t bothered, then you hear the sob story about how it was meant for their beloved late grandfather who practicly raised them and you just have to step back and think that, they obviously did not think. trust and reasearch their artist.
Just because you see good tattoos on the wall, does not mean the artist done them or will even bother to make it that good. I have known some lazy artists in my time who if they think can make a quick buck or two will put down the sloppiest thing. It’s horrible. it really is as you and others have said here, a trust thing. Don’t think just cos you’ve went into a shop with an idea that you have to get it booked there, talk with the artist get to know the artist fuck, invite the artist and her hubby to your barbeque. Just create a bond with them 1st.
Ive had a mixed background lot of jobs, Ive been a bar maid, waitress, clerk even been a wedding planner. And they have have their own degree of discrimination I think.
As far as tattoos go, mine are fairly new and my current job well it’s a call center and they don’t give a fuck. But the amount of jobs I have been declined and fired from due to my piercings is unbelievable. When I was 17 I had my labret and snake bites done, went for a job in a call center and I was interviewed by a fossil of a woman and she denied me a place in the call center, even though I scored the highest for the week on the aptitude tests and typing tests, on the fact that she could hear the metal clanging against my teeth, which isn’t even possible unless I make it hit against them.
at one time I have had 11 piercings in my face I was unemployed for about 2 years and I had no idea why, my cv was solid my work ethics good. Then I realized it was the piercings. My 1st job out of leaving school I had my lip pierced and was told to take it out everyday, even though there was a woman who had her nose pierced. I ask my boss why she was okay to keep her in and I not, and her reply was, because it’s more esthetically pleasing and not reminiscent of thugs. We did not get on well after this.
There was a big thing in the UK a few months back where one of our leading music stores HMV was changing it’s policies on tattoo’s and piercing was anyone on here caught up in that? I’d like to see how it’s effected folk. I worked there years ago, was great! That and Gamestation have been the number 1 place where people have really been able to be themselves when working that I have worked, save from the tattoo parlor obviously.
