sorry, I couldnt make that out. I tried, just cant see it, but now that I know, I can see it more. Here is the thing, in my opinion, your back has a lot of realestate to do something pretty amazing. My concern would be that if you do the needle and thread, and you choose to add later on, it may be difficult to add too.

I would really think it out before you go ahead with the needle and thread, but if you like the idea or it means something to you then go for it.

I mean there is a lot you can do to it, add some shading around it, maybe add some japanese to it, cherry blossoms, maybe a koi, have a dragon going around it, maybe even like a gesha would look sweet considering its a female name. You could even to a lotus flower on the botom of it, so much to do.

What are some of your interests that you can do a theme around it.

Just my 2 cents for what its worth

its funny, you are the first person to ask me.

So here it is. I love japanese tattoos out of all the different styles. I wanted a tattoo that symbolized my life and family. I have always loved the koi and the legend behind it. I am very close to my family and have always tried to be like my father as he is such a wonderful person.

I wanted the tattoo to symbolize my journey of life, becoming a man and working to be like my father. So as the legend goes the koi transforms into a dragon, and eventually the spirit becomes a samurai. The dragon koi symbolizes my journey in life, my strengths and the dragon the protector. I feel at this point in life this koi dragon best symbolizes me at this time. I work hard daily to become a better person, a better worker, a better father most importantly so that one day, my kids look at me the same way as I look at my dad.

There are also four red cherry blossoms on the tattoo. They represent myself, my wife, and my two kids. As for the back of my arm, the lantern symbolizes life, and the kanji symbol stands for family tribe. I have the rope broken off blowing in the clowds, showing the complexity of life and family.

I dont know man, never really verbalized this to anyone, hope you understand. Bottom line was that I really wanted the koi to represent me as a person and a father. I felt that at this stage of my life, the koi shows all the hard work that I have applied to life and family. the dragon half was the protector of the family, and the transitiion shows that I am still growing as a person and a father, inspiring to be like my father the samurai.

Wow! sorry for the ramble

that hurt man, wow. The inside of my arm took a beating like I never felt before. It looks good, but I want to wait until the colors come in better before I snap photos. In six hours we got the back of my arm finished, the koi coloured and he added about 2″ of length. It now finishes off at my elbow so a true half sleeve.

I have about 1 to 2 hours left. one spot im not sure about right now, however, we will see how it looks when it heals. It should get better and will need a touch up forsure.

im so excited, I saw the drawing for the inside of my arm today. It is going to be so good. It is a japanese lantern on a rope that has been torn, kinda blowing in the wind. We are adding the japanese clouds and wind bars around the back.

I am also adding the rest of the bottom all around, about 1 1/2 inches lower for a full half piece. Should be sick. Plus colouring in the koi dragon.

Im booked from 12 to 5 so I hope that I get it all done.

I promise that I will take the pics and post them on Friday. I will do the front, both sides and back as well. I just hope that I make it through the back of my arm, they say that it is a very painful place to get a tattoo.

not to late. Im more confused this week than ever before. I am leaning towards either yellows and green for the beards, or yellows and reds for the beards.

As for the koi, copper, orange, yellow, red. I saw a green koi head with the first part of the koi in green and back half in orange that was cool as well.

I am doing the back of my arm with blue japanese lantern and red writing and then lots of black background.

I just wish I could decide on the color, it is drivng me crazy.

I appreciate all of the comments thus far, thanks so much.

I will post the result on Friday

ok so i go this Friday for my second sitting. I have worked the colors out and we are going traditional koi colors, however, going with coppers, and darker yellows. the scale work is going to be oranges, black, yellow and the beards are going to be yellows and red. Should be really sick, darker than a normal koi tattoo to look a little tougher.

Now I have also added for the back of my arm a japanese lantern with kanji symbol for family. Should look good, adding the rest of the black background as well.

Now quick question, I am thinking about extending this down to my elbow to complete the half sleeve. Do you think I should add the windbars etc to the bottom, or just leave it the length that it is???
