I tried tattooing the bottom of a client’s foot once early in my career. He had alot of prior ink in various places from other artists and myself, alot of it was very large work. He was able to endure all of it fairly well even in painful areas. Except his feet. He was unable to withstand the pain working on the bottom of his foot more than 30 hectic minutes. He was unable to sit still for almost all of it. What he wanted was a tattoo of a squashed bumblebee, entrails hanging out, the works. He ended up with just an outline. 6 months later, it had all disappeared except for a few spotted reminders of the experience. I won’t make the attempt ever again and I don’t recommend anyone else trying it

LOL just read through this…why wud you pay to have it removed the first time….id put paint thinner on his neck regardless of whether it would work or not…would teach him a lesson…LOL x

Wow, what kind of caustics are you guys using in Paint Thinner in the UK? I don’t see how a topical application of paint thinner could ever be a deterrent to anything, it doesn’t do much to the skin at all unless your skin is immersed in it which can overdry the skin.

I’ve seen alot of that type of work unfortunately. These “wanna-bees” who are artisticly illiterate set up shop and until they’re run out of business by their own doing they do alot of damage to clients and the business overall. The worst part is there is little that can be done to stop them legally and alot to protect them. They’re protected by “freedom of expression” at it’s lowest excuse. Unless they are violating health codes or causing physical harm, infections, or unsafe practices they cannot legally be shut down by critique alone.

For example, If you choose a design to be tattooed, and the end result is horrible in appearance, distorted features, crooked or shaky lines and shotty color, so long as sterile technique is maintained and it heals well the law would say you have no rights for compensation because the tattoo is “The artists representation of the chosen design.” In other words, choosing your artist is much more important than the design alone”

Ask to see a photo portfolio of their personal work. Don’t rely on what you see on the wall. If they don’t have an impressive portfolio of past work to show you it’s not by accident. Study their portfolios carefully, don’t just flip through the pages looking for “Cool designs” Study the lines, look for steady smooth and deliberate ink. Make sure the photos are of healed tattoo work more than fresh ones. Don’t accept any excuses for second rate tattooing, there are no excuses worth the risk. If what you see in the portfolio is acceptable to you then go for it.

Isn’t this topic leaning dangerously close to being a artist technique topic? If so, shouldn’t it be in the pro artists section instead of public?

Well, I just got my Fusion Shader back from Time Machine yesterday. I checked the serial and it looks like they sent me a brand new machine. So hats off to Time Machine. Their customer service is top shelf

Think of your skin as being a semi transparant window to what’s just underneath. Skin can even be used as a lampshade if it’s removed and stretched. Morbid analogy but you get the point. Light penetrates through.

The tattoo ink when healed isn’t “On” your skin but it’s “In” your skin. It’s actually under the inactive epidermis and set into the dermis area. To see the tattoo ink, you have to see through this thin layer of skin. It can easily be compared to window tinting. Clear windows = Light Complexion vs. Medium Tint = Olive, Tan or Bronze Skin Complexion to Limo Black Tint = Darkest complexions. Darker tones of skin will obscure colored inks. Lighter inks are hidden with medium complexions, the darkest skin can hide all but black ink. It doesn’t mean the ink isn’t there, it just means the pigmentation of the skiin over it is dominant in opacity.

Yeah it’s me playing the “Velcro Loco” (Using strips of self adhesive I normally use to secure flash on the walls.) My Apprentice Joe is behind the camera. I told him about the famous guy this thread was created about  and we came up with this impromptu…

I don’t know about the rest of us in this section but this simple comment from him says alot to me. He’s taken a beating on crtiticism from us and his attitude is still good and respectful. I think he has the attitude that’s necessary to succeed in this business which can be half the battle. I give him credit for that.

Okay, Outlaw, and Izzy, way I see it, we’ve got a choice. This guy is gonna do it regardless. He’s in a shop, and he doesn’t know shit. If he doesn’t learn some things he’s gonna screw people up. I say he needs to go to the other forum, learn like everyone else, and he don’t get in pro til his crap improves. Its either that or we kick him to the curb, ignore him, and he keeps on keeping on, doing things his own way.

I second that motion. not because I’m trying to be an asshole, rather I’m looking out for the betterment of the industry and the safety of the clients, who pay all our bills. I mean safety not just in a santiary sense, but safety from ugly tattoos, which also hurts the business. I earned my dues the hard way, as most of us, he’s no exception.

I’m an Atheist simply because it appears every religion has a few really compelling stories, weighed down by countless ridiculous impossible to believe stories. I’ve never seen any deity worshipping religion that wasn’t heavily founded through hatred, intolerance or a need for control by it’s writers. Besides, if that means I’ll go to hell so be it. I’d rather be where I actually know someone if I’m to be there that long. I’d have too many issues with the boss to go to heaven, there’s a lot of resentment I’d have towardes someone who seems to be such an absentee father as him.

Wish we were high volume! I do a pretty decent business here, but not as good as I’d like. Amber and I were able to open NCI debt free, so we’re building up the overhead to open a second studio. This one we are going to place for high volume and money, we’re gonna open in Ft. Worth this time and set it in a good location. We’ve got a 4 year goal for that, and when we do, we’re gonna build large enough to put a pool table in that one also. If I get down to Corpus I’ll drop in and see you. Are you going to the 11th Annual Texas Tattoo Roundup?

If you come to Corpus without seeing me I’ll be pissed!!!

No, I’m afraid this is one I didn’t know about until it was too late to prepare. It’s too bad too because it looks like some of my old idols and legends will be there. My all time favorites for black and grey, some of my greatest influences were Jack Rudy and Brian Everett. the last time I saw Jack Rudy was in 1993 in San Diego. I’ve never met Brian Everett so I’ll be missing out this time. Take a few snapshots for me though!!!

Out of curiosity on a tattoo party how do you control the amount of time spent on each person’s work?
Say you have 5 people and each tattoo takes a min of 2 hours that is 10 hours of work.

Do you insist that they choose only small tattoos or come back for a finish up later?depends on amount of people

How do you get round the regs of tattooing people under the influence of drugs or alcohol?“party” dosent mean room full of tanked ass holes lol

Do you insist on ID checks as well as you could get ppl at the party claiming to be 18 and are in fact a minor.yes business is conducted just as is i were open day to day waivers and after care sheets signed dated and copy of i.d.

Do you have limits to the amount of people (if you employ multiple artists?).i have a few sit in artist at times normally it 3-5 people sometimes more if its a touch-up or like …i wanna add my moms name deal.. to help with crowd control i have a graphic artist who comes in to work on flash with people and i spread it out from lik 1pm on saturday till like 11 12 at night with breaks for food etc.

That’s a bit strange to say the least. You say you’re new to the business, a newbie. Then you claim to have a group of 3 – 5 artists at your beck and call for backup at these “tattoo parties.” During your normal studio hours however you’re alone in a 1100 sqft studio which has 2 workstations besides your own for tattooing? And why the hell would you need to hire a graphic artist to do you flash for you? Was “Art” something you felt wasn’t a contributing skill for the business?

I’m sorry but I’m calling the BS flag on this one at this point….

Corpuc Christi Texas, Southside business district, inside a large shopping center called the Corpus Christi Trade Center at 2833 SPID. I only wish I had space enough for a pool table. My place is
<<>>, lol, but it’s a high volume location so I’ve stayed there my entire 18 years. This Halloween I’m not planning anything, because I’m puttingh alot into an event on Oct 11, 12 weekend. A company called “Heatwave” is hosting a car show at the American Bank Center Convention Center. They’ve asked me to set up as a vendor during the event so I said what the hell, October is usually slow for me so I can use the boost if you know what I mean….

I have to be honest with you. From what you’ve told us I can tell you with absolute certainty that your life will most likely come to an end sometime within the next 60 or 70 years….. Probably, but maybe longer…

LMAO!!! Don’t fall for any of that Hokey pokey nonsensical crap! If you’re not even Asian, why subscribe to Asian superstition? If you did, by the same token wouldn’t you be just as likely to suffer bad juju from superstitions in every culture and background as well? You’d never be able to keep up. Virtually everything you do will be considered bad luck to someone, or good luck to another. Don’t worry, be happy drink beer and so on……:)
