Traditional Japanese tattoos are interpretations of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, some of which are hundreds of years old.

Thanks! From what I can see in the pictures, traditional style would use a more ‘traditional’ style of clouds and waves don’t use as striking colours, where as neo traditional would use brighter colours to make the main pieces stand out more against a background with different shaped clouds such as swirls?

Traditional Japanese is a simplistic style which is based on the tattoos origin ‘Ukiyo-e print’. Considered by many to be ‘Authentic Japanese art’.
An example of traditional Japanese tattoo
An example of Neo Japanese tattoo.
Every artist will have a slightly varying style, it really is a very diverse subject.

That guy you mentioned does not do traditional Japanese but he does do really good stuff in the other style. If you are willing to travel a little, I can recommend someone in Leeds.

If you are in Liverpool and would be willing to travel to Leeds. Diego Azaldegui does some of the best traditional Japanese in anywhere in the world if you like his style.

Peter is quite correct. Can you post up any pics in this thread? What exactly is the style you want? Japanese work can vary greatly from strictly traditional to bold an westernised versions.

If it is below the elbow then it would be a 3/4 sleeve, are you having the inner side of the arm done too, as in a proper sleeve? Both my sleeves were done in about 12 hours. What is the motif?

Fair enough. Looks as though it can reworked, and background can always be added to Japanese work. Would defo go to specialist Japanese artist though if you want a full sleeve. Look forward to your progress.

I got tattooed on Tuesday on my right thigh. I let Ryan draw the kind of typewriter he wanted, and he ended up making a far larger piece than I anticipated. It ranks in top three most painful experiences of my life. He sprayed it with lidocaine. Seemed to help mildly.
The interesting thing is what I did before that…

Cohesive Japanese work should not really need ‘filler’. Do you have any pictures of what you already have?

There is one thing that goes really well with Koi and that is more koi. The key to aesthetic Japanese beauty is composition, you have a Koi and Lotus, then make the theme Koi and Lotus. You have plenty of other skin for other themes or things you like.
If you are not keen on the Koi, then how about another Auspicious animal? If you like…[Read more]

It’s an unusual style of Japanese, the background is kind of odd, not in bad way but kinda unique. It’s really well done and I like the use of subtle colour against the background, this is the way Japanese should look IMO. Who is the artist, wouldn’t mind checking out his other work. Cheers.

You are right to a point, how I wish it was that simple, but the racing industry keeps the breed alive.
Had no idea there was even such a thing as Whippet racing, either way, all sight hounds are beautiful natured animals, including whippets.
