In my experience the UK is a peculiar melting pot. Acceptance is very much dependant on your location within the country.
Within the major urban/suburban centres few people will bat an eyelid regarding tattoos. Outside of that however, acceptance varies greatly.
I’d say that the harder a tattoo is to cover, the more socially unacceptable it is.
But as has been already mentioned, there’s going to be a large variance depending on geographical and social factors.
I’m a juggler in my spare time, and a great many of my friends wouldn’t give a second thought to any tattoos or piercings they encounter, whereas people I know via work think very differently.
In the words of Richard Feynman, what do you care what other people think?
I don’t say that to be cruel, but simply to prompt the truth. Why are you asking the opinions of others, when your opinion is the most important of all.
Ignore your friend – if you valued their views to exclusion of all others you wouldn’t be here asking us.
Ignore us – if you value our views over your own, its probably time to take a step back and evaluate what you really want.
Just do what you will and be happy with it.
I like it a lot. The tribal influence is clear, but it goes beyond that into something that’s unique to you.
Outside of that – never mind what other people say about it. Your opinion is paramount. If you’ve got a tattoo seeking the approval of others, you’re doomed to fail, but if you’ve got it for yourself, it’s something you can appreciate for the rest of your life – the rest of the world be damned!
Dammit. I was saving the gold swimming trunks for a special occasion too!
🙂
Yeah – were I back in Edinburgh I wouldn’t have any problem asking my original artist to do what I want – particularly after spending so much time in his company. It just feels odd to me starting out again with a relative stranger, especially when I’m skirting an area that’s so sensitive to me.
Funnily enough I don’t have any problems with exposing myself (or any part of me thereof), I just don’t want to weird out anyone else!
My tattoo only covered a small part of my spine and hurt like hell.
Just FYI – everyone is different.
I’d forgotten about this thread. I never did post up pictures of the finished article.
Here’s how it ended up:
Nonsense – I’m a comic book freak going on 30 years and there have been many instances of Marvel and DC characters interacting.
Here’s a classic George Perez cover from the Avengers/JLA crossover to illustrate:
It’s easy for me to judgmental but the images you posted strike me as very generic designs.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t use any of them, but as an exercise, try to conceive of a design or image that would appeal to you if you could’t use a design in tribal style for example. Whatever you choose is going to be with you a for a very long time to come, and it won’t do you any harm to take a few more days or weeks to come up with something that’s unique to your own situation and personality rather than just something that looks cool.
It’s been said already, but I’m going to reiterate: both designs are fine, but they have to be bigger!
Give it a few more years and that sort of reaction shall be the norm rather than the exception.
I’d always be upfront. In the UK I’ve always had to sign a form disclosing this sort of information, and regardless, I’d rather make sure the artist is aware of what they’re getting into so they can take what additional precautions they deem necessary.
If they turn you down – so be it. It should be their decision to make.
