I traveled 800 miles to get my work done by Gunnar. I know there are plenty of good artists within an hour of me. I took my idea to the internet and searched talent and I “connected” with Gunnar. I wanted something special, knowing whatever I get is permanent. For me personally, I could never be connected to one artist if I was too have lots of…[Read more]

I just went through a 7 hour sitting on Monday. At one point numbing cream was applied. After 20 minutes it wore off, and to me the pain afterwards seemed a little hightened. Also, allergic reactions to these creams can vary. In some cases it can affect your pores which could make inking more difficult for the artist.

I’m a CPA (Ceretified Public Accountant for those who dont’ know) and a business consultant. Self-employed, no boss which is nice. I just get to yell at myself. Worked at public CPA firms for a while, then went to private industry and was a controller and then a CFO. After being laid off due to budget cuts (or maybe I just did a shit ass job and…[Read more]

It’s all about personal preference. For one I would never get any words, name or otherwise, on a tattoo. I’m planning my 2nd tattoo, and incorporated into it will be two bands logos. That could be construed as star struck, but I look at the logo as art versus just the name of the band, plus the logos aren’t the tattoo but just part of it.
As far…[Read more]

On the flip side though, having the tattoo consumer who “just goes in for a tattoo” does provide business for an artist. Once an artist is well established this sort of client isn’t necessary anymore. But for a beginning artist, the flash and no thought clients who just want a tattoo can help a new artist grow and prosper with cash flow. The more…[Read more]

I think the problem overall with people getting tattoos is that a majority of people don’t do any research into the tattoo industry before going about getting their first one. The mind says “always wanted one”, and the eyes see “tattoo parlor” and voila – tattoo. OK, maybe simplified, but I too was partially naive when I got my 1st this past July.…[Read more]

I disagree somewhat based on what I’ve seen in every shop I’ve been into – those books and books of “get it now” tattoos. Some people decide they want a tattoo with no idea in mind and go into a shop. They flip through the poster boards on the wall or the artists books and say “I want that one”. Now, that isn’t to say in that scenerio there could…[Read more]

I don’t disagree with you. I got my 1st tattoo last year – eagle upper right arm. I just like eagles for no particular reason, and wanted that to be my 1st. I am getting ready to book for my 2nd based on an idea I’ve had for a long time. It has some meaning to me – based on my love for heavy metal music.
But, that’s me. I never planned to get a…[Read more]

I have been searching for an artist to do a tattoo idea of mine for 4 or so months. Not final yet, but after a lot of patience I’m pretty sure subject to scheduling I landed one of the artists I was looking for – Gunnar Gaylord. I also emailed Nick Baxter, Paul DeVries, and Brandon Bond.
Brandon Bond never got back to me. Mike DeVries emailed me…[Read more]

I certainly can’t relate a real life experience as my only tattoo is upper arm hidden by a short sleeved shirt.
I am getting ready to get a 2nd tattoo, and I’ve laid out ground rules. Those rules are a short sleeved shirt must be able to cover the tattoo. That could mean some bleed over onto the shoulder/pec, but I don’t know yet.
I’m a CPA…[Read more]

From someone with 200+ hours on his body, just another confirmation that me with 2.5 hours of ink is doing the right thing. I am stoked for this. I will be patient, yet at the same time cannot wait to see his vision of my idea.

Gunnar finally got back to me (he apologized for his delayed response). I know he’s busy, so I’m cool and patient.
He wants to proceed. He was actually booking for April which surprised me as i figured he’d be booked out farther, but I told him I had planned to do this late summer/early fall. I need to save money for the tattoo and travel. We’ll…[Read more]

Arni – as an obvious metal enthusiast, what’s your short list of favorite bands? Here’s just a sampling of mine. My song collection right now per iTunes is 39,394 tracks so it’s sometimes difficult to name them all :-).
By far my favorite band is Opeth.
