hey outlaw –

it looks pretty good already! a few hints i would have for you..

in your sketch, you have a very shallow value range. you should have values all the way from 1 (the lightest) to 10 (nearly black) also, with the hair.. shapes translate into portrait tattoos very well. try sketching in broad strokes and highlights (the hair on the left side of the drawing looks really good)

also, remember that for a realistic portrait, 3d proportion is super super important. determine a light source and shade appropriately.

as for the tattooing technique, try experimenting with white ink. pop those highlights in the eyes out and shade the hair highlights in with a flat 12 needle formation.

my number one hint! don’t go overboard shading the face in. remember that human skin is not white, and already makes up a large portion of the face values. over-shading looks dirty and in the case of a child, will make them look old and haggard.

check my album for a reference!

good luck m8

scarlet –

my advice would be to just tough it out. taking pain killers thins out your blood and will possibly increase bleeding while being tattooed. (also potential for a lower quality tat)

tattoos hurt.. but the pain makes them so much more gratifying when they’re done, doesn’t it?

my longest session was 7 hours and it was unfuckingbelivably painful.. but it was completely worth it when i saw the finished product.

to be blunt, 3 hours isn’t much.. and women have a higher pain tolerance than men anyways. have some guts 🙂

also, if you have pigment on your skin outside the area of the tattoo it’s not to worry about and once the tattoo has healed it will most likely be gone anyways.

it’s best to gently wash excess ink and plasma off your fresh tattoo for the first few mornings. this discourages the forming of scabs and hard… stuff. after a few days it should start the peeling stage

Well, I can tell you’re seventeen because your reading comprehension sucks.

I never said any of that. What I said was, if you reread it, was that of course you don’t care what people a littler older and wiser than you think because you’re sixteen, therefore you know it all and are a flipping moron, but that’s okay–that’s what 16 year olds are supposed to think.

But, while we’re on the subject, yes, 16 is too young to be getting ink. You might get a teardrop on your face, or a SlipKnot S, or a hatchetman on the back of your hand. At 16, or 17 for that matter, you don’t know what your life is going to be yet–hell, you’re not even who you’re going to be, you’re still growing into him. You may love SlipKnot now, but twenty years down the road? Who knows. One thing I can tell you for sure is that having tat teardrop tattoo is going to make it interesting to get into law school later in life.

There’s also another stigma with getting a tattoo too young–no reputable artist in America will do one for you, so children under the age of 18 have to go to scratchers for the most part. And if you don’t understand the inherent problems with getting a tattoo from a scratcher, otherwise known as Jerry from the block who’ll do you in his basement for a carton of Menthols, then you shouldn’t be getting ink anyway.

And let’s be real here for a moment: my right arm is sleeved out. When I get some serious cash, I’m doing my left arm, and I’m seriously considering getting a few dermal inkers in my face. I’m 25, I’m married, I’m in art school, and I’m working towards being a tattoo artist. I know where my life is headed, but I’m also old enough to understand my choices have closed doors to me. It’s going to be very, very hard in the future for me to get a nice, cushy office job, and in an economy based more on service rather than production, most living wage jobs are exactly those. Until I graduate, even with my fabulous employment record (ran a coffee house for three years, supervisor in a warehouse at 18, supervisor at the credit agency I most recently worked at), I’m more or less going to be forced to work at McDonald’s or construction. If I fuck up and fail out (for sake of arguement) I’m stuck there.

But I know the risks, weighed them, discussed it with my wife, and move forward.

Can you honestly tell me a 16 year old has enough of their lives worked out in order to make a decision like “should I get a sleeve, or a permament piercing like a dermal inker?” when you consider the consequences?

If so, you either ain’t being honest, or you’re an idiot.

Love. Peace. Metallica.

wow, this is as biased as it gets..

i generally don’t speak to assholes, so i’ll keep this short.

point one – i love my tattoos. i will continue to love my tattoos. i am already involved in a self-based career that allows tattoos (and i plan on continuing this path)

point two – take a look at my albums. i sure as hell aint seeing choppers.

why can’t we just get along and respect each other for their ink without the profiling?

I think that’s a very unfair statement. I’m seventeen, and have many tattoos. (half sleeve done when i was 16) i don’t believe that because of my age, i am a stupid kid who will regret his tattoos later in life. it’s all very subjective.

1500 but it was worth it

definitely a great great deal. the fact that he took 26 hours in total means isn’t anything but good if he charged you that little.

elgato if you don’t mind me asking, how much did you end up paying for the whole shibang?

standard rate is around 150$ / hour… and if that’s what you paid i feel sorry for you..

but if he charged by the piece, maybe 1400 or so for both arms that’s completely reasonable and actually preferable that he took (so, so, so) long.

once again though, they look great.

Tribal takes longer in some cases than other designs… Precision is key and if done incorrectly it would look tacky with blotches and unclean linework…. So they look good from what I can see.

blotches and unclean linework make any tattoo look tacky, not just tribal work.

these are completely symmetrical and obviously stenciled. 10 hours for each arm is absolutely preposterous. 2 words, ripped off.

part of being a consistent, reliable artist is being able to deliver good work for a fair price (decent running time)

i don;t care if you can spend half an hour making a single needlesroke look clean cut, i’m not paying 3000$ for a couple simple tribal tattoos.

10 hours per arm?

that should have taken 8 hours total max.

looks like you got ripped off, but those are some nice tribals!

thank a lot guys!!

the greatest thing about this artist is that he is an incredibly nice person in addition to being an incredible artist; he is also relatively unknown and appointments can be made as little as 4 days in advance

a fresh tattoo is a fresh open wound. homeostasis kicks in and sends more than enough blood to your fresh tattoo in the first place. (hence the fresh “red” look of a tattoo)

assuming your artist did a half decent job at the least, you will have no problems with scabbing if you simply wash excess plasma/blood away and keep it moderately moisturized.

(especially in the early stages of healing), soaking your tattoo site will convert your healing wound into a big flesh swamp (obviously not a good thing), while leaving it under-moisturized will create scabbing. a happy medium is necessary.
