Figured I’d get crucified for that post but it’s what I’m feeling.

Well there’s a hell of a lot of distance between what you have now and spectacular. You don’t need to be an enthusiast to see that this piece is A1 scratcher work. As we have said before, no respectable artist is going to do some minor adjustments to someone else’s work and that aside, this piece needs a hell of a lot more than some minor adjustments anyway. If this was on a canvas instead of your back, someone would have taken a torch to it a long time ago.

You’ve gotten a lot of good advice here and so far, have continued to reject it because it’s not what you want to hear. Meanwhile, that same mentality is exactly what got you into this predicament because I’ll bet you only paid about 1/5th to 1/10th of what a piece like this should have cost you in the first place. It’s been 4 months since you posted this thread and you’re still spinning your wheels.

I’m fully aware of that, and I am appreciative of the advice and I’ve attempted to follow up on it and it just hasn’t worked out. I just feel like I have a lot more options than traveling half way across the state to that one specific shop.

Trust me I know how long its been, I just saw the starting date of this thread a few days ago and cringed, but I’m not trying to rush into it again. I’ve tried to get in contact with Pangburn again and when I get back to Jersey over Thanksgiving break I’d like to consult with him and possibly set something up during my Winter Vacation but he just stopped replying to my messages a while ago and not sure what to do about it.

I just feel like there has to be someone in my traveling range that I can go to that will be able to fix it without going the cover up route.

Just remember it is a lot harder to fix a tattoo the second time.

I don’t plan on running in blind but I appreciate the advice.

I know this may sound weird but I’m not looking for the worlds greatest back piece. I’m not a tattoo enthusiast, I just want a good looking phoenix that won’t cost me an arm and a leg. I’m not trying to impress anyone with a spectacular tattoo, I just want to be happy with it myself. And for that I don’t think I need an entire new cover up, I think a big adjustment will do.

Rent one then. :/

I’m a Poor College Student….

I have about 1000 to my name and that’s going towards the tattoo. I’d rather find something somewhat in the area or reachable by subway than blow a chunk of the money on car rentals or cab fair.

Pumpkin … works looks clean, but certainly nothing exceptional out of any of these guys.

Redemption … better than Pumpkin, though again, nothing phenomenal. Also, it looks like virtually all traditional work, which your phoenix is not.

Stingray … I only went through the first 5 artists. Definitely not impressed with these guys.

With all of the fantastic artists in New England, there’s definitely no need to settle. Pretty much anyone at Off the Map could do better than any of the guys at all 3 of those shops.

Off the Map is on the other side of the state, and without a car there’s no way I could get there.

I’ve been suggested 3 parlors and a lot of the artists look pretty good but figure I’ll get another opinion.

I work in a connivence store and it was like Easter or something, business was slow and I needed a picture with good lighting so I took it there.

I really am worried about the level of skills out there, this is what I would do…. Just my roughs as usual:) Ive also turned the head… took me 5 minutes … more can be done to the feathers but i would concentrate on fixing the phoenix first – flames 2nd

Thanks for doing that, stuff like this makes me think I don’t need a full blown cover up.

Have you tried contacting Johnny Thief at Seppuku Tattoo? He seems to do quite a few cover-ups. He’s quite good imho, but doesn’t have that world class rep so he should be easier to book.

Here’s a cover-up he did:

I would but I’m moving to Boston for College. If I haven’t found anyone by Winter Vacation I’ll definitely contact him.

Again, you were being really difficult with Pangburn so you can’t really blame him. I know that waasn’t your intent but it should have simply been “I want this fixed or covered up. Are you interested?” and if his answer was yes, then book the appointment. The better artists won’t waste time with someone who isn’t sure about what they want. Thanks for keeping us updated. None of them are likely to to be willing to fix someone else’s work either; cover-up or nothing. I’m looking forward to seeing it fixed when you eventually get it done.

btw, in the New England area, there are tons of great artists. Maybe someone at Off the Map can help you out .. either one of the resident artists or one of the many great guest artists they have. FYI, Remis and Rema are already fully booked and Terry Ribera isn’t doing tats while he’s there.

i agree with defiance here…

what was your hesitation to agree to full back piece anyway? i think when he replied to you and said it has to be a full back piece cover-up you could have booked an appointment right away… i think you should drop your conviction that it can still be touched-up as a phoenix or within the phoenix area only…

Fair enough, I was hesitant about a back piece, but I wasn’t dead set against it. He informed me a month ago that he will be busy moving his studio until the middle of august, and after that I could get a consult. I made it clear in one of the later e-mails that I would go in open minded, and that I understand that he might not be able to do exactly as I want, but he still hasn’t gotten back to me. I’ve sent a few e-mails but it looks hopeless.

The updates are no problem, I’m just really grateful for all the help. I’ll definitely post the final results.

I’ll start doing some research, though with the incoming hurricane I might not get there for a while.

Think of something like a Kick-ass full back piece like fantasy or something would be awesome. Save and spend like a good £2000 on your back.

Thats…Not what I want. At all.

Amazingly enough…I still haven’t gotten anything done. The Pangburn and the other artists I was talking too basically broke off communication with me no matter what I tried…I move to Boston in a week, does anyone know of any artists there I should check out?

Thanks again for all the help everyone.

Doesn’t look like I’ll be getting any of the recommended artists, but no one looks particularly bad imo, so I think I’ll still go and see what the remaining artists can do.

Not sure if what I need is up his alley but he has nice work, I’ll probably send him an e-mail to see what he thinks about it.

Well I’ve contacted both Kerns, Timmy B, and Pokorny. Pokorny is booked for the weekend but said he would contact me if anything opens up. Haven’t heard from the others yet.

Did you even look at the convention link you yourself posted?

Haha. Yeah these guys are going to be at the convention.

Yeah? I looked and only saw 2 or 3 of the guys listed. Maybe there were only a handful listed on the page I was looking at.

I’ve obviously never been to a convention before, so what the artists are all set up in different areas and you just go and talk to them about what you want done?

Edit: Aaaah didn’t follow the link to the main site, guess I’ll check out the rest of those guys.

I see a few good artists. I may have missed a couple and a a few i mention might not be the same style u are looking for, but u can check them out and decide:

Tim kern
Timmy b
Sean zee
Myke chambers
Daniel pokorny
Dan henk
Billi vegas
Caesar

And out of those artists my recommendation would be tim kern.

I’m guessing those are just artists you suggest and not ones that will be at the convention.

Looking at some of their work just makes me more angry that I didn’t go with one of them from the start, and now what they can do will be very limited.

Tim Kern’s work is amazing by the way.

nowhere near as good as tim .but he isnt BAD. i dont see any coverup work in his portfolio either…

I’m not 100% about a cover up, I think it’s fixable, but I don’t know to what extent. Though I did see cover ups in his full portfolio at the shop.

I’m going to a Tattoo Convention on the 30th to see if there’s anyone there that would be suitable, but I’m not sold on it.

Anyone recognize any of the artists or think there would be anyone in particular that would be good?
