I went for my most recent consultaion for a half sleeve in January, dragged a few idea in with me off the net, Japanese style, for pheonix…so having ayour own ideas is always a good starting place.

Anyway he made a suggestion if I was up for it, which I was; he is taking new direction with his work and wanted to get away from heavy outline work, I could have said ‘no, keep it tradional’ but went along giving him artiistic licence, and am so glad I did. I have now got an amaxzing pheonix on my arm (doesn’t go all the way around) form my inner elbow up onto my shoulder.

I think basically, what I trying to say is

have and idea of what you want – don’t leave it to the artist
find an artist whose work you like (and trust)
be open to their suggestion
allow artistic licence

I’m so pleased with my latest piece and the fact it looks nothing like any of the ideas I brought in with me in the first place.

Hi Guys

haven’t posted for a while but how strange I got a notification via email on this post today. I have just arrived back from having a large upper arm piece finished……and I tipped!! Yep, I added on a drink on top because it just felt right. I know I raised the question before about tipping and I can’t remember if it was on this particular thread (I was too tired to check as I’m exhausted….you know the weariness of the pain).

While I was in the studio, another artist was displaying the bottle of Jack Daniels he got form a client for ‘just touching up’ a few weeks after the work was done, his client insisted even though the artis said ‘no mate, it won’t cost a thing’.

But as for tipping being an ‘Americanism’ along with pumkins at Halloween, tipping is something I have been accustomed to my 43 years living in the UK (from birth to Irish immigrants).

I tip my hairdresser for making my locks more pleasing than I went in and the cabbie for getting me home safely, they even hang around sometimes to make sure I get my key in the door and safely into my house.
I don’t know how much they get paid!!

I tipped, and it was gracefully accepted, which pleased me. I am exceedingly please with my new piece of art (my forth by this artist)……and he was pleased with his tip.

So refuse

A trip to Waterstones proved frutless. Not much in the way of Japenese art. When I expalined what I wanted the book for, the girl very kindly pointed to shelf below about tattoos,, along side books on Banksy and street art. I can pick up a leasst 3 differnt tat mags from my local Smiths. Womams Weekly and Company aren’t really inspirational.

Back to work tomorrow, so a trip to the library it is then. Or a visit to the Japanese restraurant.

thanks once again.

I posted a similar question few months ago. I had never tipped an artist before. Anyway, after a second sitting I handed him a little envelope and told him to have a drink on me. It was unexpected but appreciated.

You know, I’ve never thought about wether freckles disappear under white ink or not. That actually threw me for a second. Still, now that I HAVE thought about it, it seems to me that no, they would not. Your tattoo is like a piece of art seen through a tinted window; the lighter the tint and the more powerful the colors of the artwork, the better you can see it. However, white, being so light, will invariably be somewhat changed the tint no matter what.

And, to extend the metaphor, freckles are like spots in the window where the tint is stronger than in others, so in those freckled places, the colors need to be darker to overcome the tint.

Besides, freckles are actually kind of sexy on a chick. On a guy however, they make him look like he’s 12, even when he’s 40.

Love. Peace. Metallica.

ah, KnighHawk, you have met my ginger mate then, you have described him to a ‘t’. Hes has too many freckles to look good in tattoos…..and tattoos don’t look good on 12 year olds.

Ha Ha….do they disappear under white ink.

No freckles on me. They talk about the Luck of the Irish, but I guess that is not the case for all.

What’s left to be said, that hasn’t already been said. You can’t check out a place enough. Do you have any mate who are tattooed that can recomend a tattoist to you?

The closest tattooist is always the best a good artist is worth travelling a distance to and waiting for a slot, even if you have to wait a few months.

Good luck with the next one.

Purplestar

ps no text tattoos but do have a couple of coverups.

I meant to say, The Closest tattooist is not always the best………

Some of the others have talked about showing the tattoo virgins aroud the shop, this is very reassuring, but when I had my first tattoo done 25 years ago, it never even crossed my mind to look out for or ask about these things.

You want a tattoo….you look at some flash…. you pic your pic and then get pricked. I have to say, that tatto of 25 years has now been covered.

There are still many tattoo shops around that are all flash and don’t have photos of the artists finished work for you to see…..these shops I would. (mmm 25 years ago…coverup).

Yes hindsight is a wonderfull thing. If only you could bottle it ……..oh how rich one would be.

We live and learn.

Maybe it wouldl work if you had a pastie white Irish complexion. Then you wouldn’t need to fill in the white!

Are we all not made of STAR stuff, I mean th sun is a big sun and without its energy we are nothing. So maybe the reason we choose to have a STAR is becuase it represents us on very primal level.

p.s
I have a star in the form of pentagram on a purple background )O(

It doesn’t have to specifically a tattoo book, but any image that inspires you. Then find that artist that can translate in a tattoo.
