I understand. That is what i thought i was doing, ie finding a great talented artist who may not be a household name, but is still better than the rest. I’m exhausted and haven’t even made a single step of progress yet. Ill try following work for another shop.
Hmm. That is a bummer. I hate to think I’m stuck with a tattoo that i can’t have altered. Its becoming very hard for me to feel like i can ever trust an artist, which is sad because i love tattoos and want more. I can see your point tho. So, they likely would not ever tattoo around it? Its not bad quality at all, just did not come out as realistic as i expected or wanted. And that location didnt hurt as much as i thought, so id love to have more in that area, but i prefer a new artist, and a good one who will listen to my concerns. I also dont have any problem paying the right amount of money, either, i understand the difference. I guess i just don’t know how to find a good artist im willing to pay, who will be willing to work.
Yes I noticed that Liz’s page describes that a tattoo idea has to be submitted and “accepted” before moving forward, which that is sort of off-putting but then I guess that’s the whole purpose.
It looked like David has some of the best linework, tho his page says he’s only been tattooing a few years. But he’s amazing nonetheless. I visited his site and reached out to him. I tried to describe what I have and what I want, about how I would be looking for an add on but not a cover up, and listed a couple things I’d thought of but would be interested to hear ideas. And that I would not be wanting a large piece.
Ur right I can contact lots of shops but honestly I’d be scared to take any more chances on mediocre artists. And there’s almost nothing to choose from around me from what I can tell. Rebel muse is about 3 hrs away.
Thanks for the reply, I’ll keep all of those things in mind. I will keep waiting. Maybe in a week or so I’ll hear something.
Hmm. How long a wait is long enough to move on to a different shop? I contacted rebel muse and haven’t heard a peep yet but it’s only been a couple days.
Thanks for the feedback. Its giving me a more positive outlook. I just feel like I’m so out of my league, trying to find a surgeon when all I need is a band aid. But all I read is that artist choice is so critical, and so, I’ll try to trust someone again. Anyway, I hope to hear back soon from the shop I emailed, hopefully they dont just ignore me.
U r right. I will reach out to a shop to satisfy curiosity and see what response I get, as to whether they will be open to a rework or add on, without it being a large piece.
Anybody have any experience working with a highly skilled artist for a one time small tattoo? Do they tend to pass them off to the lesser skilled artists?

You are a pro at being vague. What do you have? what do you want? Where do you live? How Far are you willing to travel?
Haha ya that was pretty much my intention to stay vague. Well I have an arrow on my upper arm. My opinion is it’s a little less than perfect but for the most part a good tattoo. Just some glaring imperfections that I can’t stop focusing on plus the fact that it didn’t turn out exactly like the reference pic which was perfect and had many aspects I really liked. I’ve had to accept that it was never going to be a replica, but if it were better than the reference pic, that would have been pretty cool. But it’s not. Anyway, I’d add to it to detract from what I see as flaws with like a bow or compass or add color or something, but can’t figure out how to approach a stellar artist who does huge custom pieces with such a small tattoo. I figure Id be handed off to somebody else who would draw me something that I’d have to pass on. Just don’t know, is that a valid assumption? I’m in Oklahoma and drove 3.5 hrs one way to see the previous artist. One thing I guess ive learned is not to find a design I like beforehand cuz I won’t be able to end up with it.
Thanks all for the input. It’s very helpful. And sorry, I know I been asking this question all over the place, but its a big mental roadblock for me right now. Im certain that choosing a new artist would be good, and I’ve gotten some good recommendations for great artists near my area. The problem I see is that they do these great big detailed custom pieces and some of them have minimum time requirements or minimum prices. If I’m wanting a quite a bit smaller piece, and possibly a rework or add on, will a really great artist be willing to work with me? I’m worried that if I go into a shop, I’ll be relegated down to the mediocre guy who works there cuz the really great artist only does huge stuff.
Am I right in the feeling that to get a small piece, I’ll be stuck with the middle of the ladder skill tattooers?
Thanks. I really like the cannibal graphics guys but the site says they have a minimum of 3 hours and $300…is that normal for the really good tattooers? I’m confused about how to get a really great small tattoo…the great tattooers seem to do mainly custom large pieces.
Um wow the Texas artists r unbelievable. I feel like I’d be wasting their time with my little crap tattoo. How does an artist like those feel about seeing a client with much smaller scale vision for a tiny piece, especially a rework or adding to something existing that’s not up to their quality?
Ya I understand. To get definitive answers and opinions, you need a pic. I just don’t want to feel worse about it, I’m trying to feel better! I don’t necessarily want it critiqued, I just want to have another perspective to help me with my slight disappointment. I wanted to have a tat I was proud to show off, not something I feel like I have to google ‘not what I expected’ about. But maybe that is completely normal and maybe nobody gets exactly what they wanted. Maybe I’ve been looking at too many portfolios with artists absolute lifetime best work or hell maybe even tats they didn’t even do. I dunno. I just want to start loving it like I wanted to.
