There’s a couple of good shops in Mass, I love Off the Map in Easthampton and Redemption in Cambridge. What kind of motorcycle do you ride?

An ’86 Honda VFR700F2.

A scratcher is a scratcher and in most cases they are untrained in blood pathogenesis, have not been trained in the proper techniques in tattooing, they work out of their house. Everywhere the laws are different and that really doesn’t matter. You and I both knowwhat they are when you see one.
Scrtachers are not welcomed by me and if they are welcome here this is not the correct forum for me (which many of you are probably going thank god)

FWIW, I am trained in bloodborne pathogens, and took an OSHA certified training course (I used to work in a research lab).

have you seen the messages which we show when people sign up?

I have always had a no unlicensed tattoo discussion on here but what level do we go to? stop everyone from asking if their work is ok unless they are confirmed artists?

and even then half the countires or some states just dont have any laws so there is no way to confirm any pro artists anyway.

im open to suiggestions i you have any

Today I looked up my state laws on tattooing.
I live in Massachusetts, which leaves the regulations up to the town and city BoH.
Then I called my local BoH, who (after many transfers and searching for someone that actually knew the town BoH requirements) informed me that the only requirements are that a BUSINESS have its facility inspected and approved by the BoH. There are no regulations for private non-commercial tattooing.
I admit, I’m surprised. Gonna have to change my signature, because apparently I’m not defying the government by tattooing. Oh well. When that rebellious urge hits me I’ll just jump on the motorcycle and break some traffic ordinances.

Talk is cheap in the world of art – talk is for politicians. If you are too ashamed to show your work (art on paper or tattoo) in a tattoo community which is inherently art, then why bother coming here at all? And why come in with such a defensive attitude. You’ve admitted already you will take your lumps, so just join, post, and roll with it. And share your work.

I’ve been a member for all of two days, it may take a little longer than that to jump in and start posting my work. And I explained that the defensive attitude is due to past experiences, both on other forums and in person (and let’s be honest, when there are people on this forum proclaiming “death to scratchers”, a certain amount of defensiveness is understandable).
If you guys have to see my work RIGHT NOW then I must disappoint, there are a lot of things I have to take care of before having fun online. I’m waiting for my order of needles to arrive, my shitty power supply is suffering a slow and dramatic death, I just started a new job, had to shell out a good deal of money to pay for classes this fall, classes start in a few weeks, on and on and on.
I’ve got a couple half-finished sketches, and a few ideas. I promise I’ll share them with you as soon as I get the time, but at the moment there are more pressing real-life chores, so the internet can wait.

Yeah, talk is cheap. So is everything on the internet. Internet takes a backseat to life.

Why do we welcome scratchers here? Fuck that

Because scratchers are tattoo enthusiasts, too. You don’t have to approve of how we go about tattooing, or how we learned. No, I’m not as good as a professional, but that doesn’t mean my work is shit. I inform everyone I tattoo that I am not licensed or formally trained, they accept that, and decide to go ahead with it. So far, no complaints. The only bad tattoos I’ve done are on myself, and I can live with them, they taught me something.

After reading a few threads, I can’t help but laugh at some of the “traditionalists” on here (though they are everywhere).
I get that there has always been a certain status quo, but some of these guys act like deviating from that status quo will rip a hole in the time-space continuum. I have first hand knowledge of what happens when you try to isolate an industry from the changing world; refusing to change the way things are done because “this is how it’s always been done” (and as a side note, that argument in and of itself is fallacious). As the saying goes, “there is more than one way to skin a cat”, and some day someone will come up with a better way to skin a cat.

This may explain what I mean when I say that the “this is how it’s always been done” argument is fallacious:

First off, welcome to the forum Matt.

Secondly, your initial post is so full of animosity that it’s no wonder some people might choose to get annoyed. Not because you’re a scratcher, but because you come in here with an attitude and automatically assuming everyone here is an asshole.

Granted, you’re not entirely wrong in that assumption, but still 🙂

I was almost feeling somewhat ashamed, till that last line. Then I lol’d.
I apologize if my post came across that way, but in the past I have caught more than my fair share of flack for being a scratcher. From a conversation at a gas station with a local tattoo artist turning into his field day for bashing me and all scratchers, to a flame-a-thon followed by a ban on another tattoo forum, I’ve become accustomed to a high level of animosity towards scratchers and, inherently, me.

For those that want to see my work, I’m designing a tribal for myself that should be done soon. The last tribal I did was with a pre-made stencil. This time, it’ll be all me. I’ve been drawing tribal designs for a little while, though my personal designs are a little bit of a break from traditional tribal styles. I’m looking forward to sharing my designs with you all.

That’s good to hear. 🙂
I’ve done one tribal so far, but it was with a stencil. That one came out pretty good, so I’ll see if I can meet up with the guy who has it for a picture. I think a tribal is in my future as well, once I decide on a location.

Ok, I suppose I may have misinterpreted your first post. I was a member on a different tattoo forum, who apparently had an unwritten “ban on sight” policy towards “scratchers”, so I sort of became accustomed to a certain level of dislike.
I’ll take a picture of some of my work next time I see one of the friends who have one of my pieces. I’ve got a couple I did on myself, but I’m a bit embarrassed by the lack of creativity. They were a learning experience, and I don’t regret doing them, but that doesn’t mean I think I did a good job. I’d like the first impression of my work to be a positive one.

I don’t want this to turn a “you can’t tattoo!” “yes I can!” thread. I am introducing myself. I’m Matt, it’s good to meet you Wardy.
Say that’s a dodge, say I’m a troll, whatever. I’d like to think we can get past the prejudices and get to know each other, or at least accept each other.
