I’m not completely possitive with this answer, but i’m guessing it’s because when you get a tattoo and it’s solid black it’s because it’s still fresh ink, but being that it’s a wound, i’m guessing it heals the same as any scab and after scabing over it slowly heals and skin goes over the wound as the scab flakes away.

Meaning that a layer of skin grows over the actual ink of the tattoo, slightly dimming the colors, and since skin tones and blacks differ so much, when it heals, the black is more greatly affected than the other colors because the drastic change is more noticable.

Also, sun and other daily activity can cause colors to fade in tattoo, and like i said, in black, the change is so drastic, it’s easier to notice. From what i understand there are plenty of lotions out there to keep your ink looking up to par and vibrant… Since i’ve started reading Tattoo Magazine i’ve run accross a few and i’m sure if you were interested alot of people on here would have suggestions as to what to do to keep your tattoo looking as new and fresh as possible.

I type too much. 🙂

Nice, nice… I don’t know alot about the tattoo shops there or anything like that
but you should definitely check out the work they do and make sure that they’re someone you’d like to show you the ropes
And when i went in about 2 weeks ago to talk to someone about my apprenticeship they basically asked me to bring some other art in, whatever type of art really, Pencil and paper, Airbrush or what have you…

But yeah i have friends in PGH, i met them through wrestling… I’ve been wrestling pro for about 4 years now and met them 2-3 years back, spent some time in pittsburgh to hang out with them and stuff and had lots of fun there…

I live in Lexington, Kentucky myself, but due to wrestling i travel alot.

Good luck with the apprenticeship man, if they give you any suggestions or tasks such as “Maybe try drawing up some wingsets and something a little more tattoo-esque, then bring it back to me” I wouldn’t take it as an insult or anything, From what i’ve gathered through stories of others getting an apprenticeship they pretty much test you and your dedication… Just a heads up, because at first i thought it was more or less there way of telling me that i wasn’t quite cutting it and needed some work, Not that i don’t… but you know. lol.

Like i said… best of luck to ya man, keep us updated, and post some pictures of your art work whenever you get a chance, i’m a big fan of airbrushing and i’ve done a little bit, but i’m far from proficient… So i’d like to see it… (i believe you have to have atleast 10 posts to upload pictures however… there is a post about it in the general board)

Ahhhh good ol’ pittsburgh, I love that place, i have quite a few friends in lincon place.
I miss it there.

But best of luck on your tattooing, i’m looking to begin too but i’m going through an apprenticeship myself. I just feel it’s the right way to go about things as far as becoming a tattoo artist is concerned…

Welcome to the forum!, i’ve been here for like 2 days, and from what i can tell, it’s a pretty sweet forum. Lots of good people.

I’d def go color. Like others have said, A phoenix sortof needs color to do it justice… I’m such a conformist, lol.

awesome piece though, i definitely like how it goes all the way down to the waistline instead of stopping at lower back….. I’d say go a little darker behind the scroll with text on it, so it will add some depth, but im sure the artist will do something of that sort…

good luck with the rest of it, looks like you have quite a bit of time left in the chair man.

Good shit man, and a nice sized piece, the cover up looks like it should work out well, and as many have already expressed, i look forward to the finished piece. Best of luck with it man!

I’m definitely a fan of this, Loving the bold lines, especially with a cartoon-esque type of tattoo… I love the bit ‘twisted’ style of the tattoo… The expression is awesome.
I look forward to seein’ the finished product. How long was this sit for these outlines?

Nice, nice, good to know, because i was definitely looking to get my rib piece done by a good artist, due to it being a bit complex, so i kindof was looking for a higher price going into it, because like you said, i don’t just want it done, i want it done right.

With that said… the guy did a great job, so it’s nice to see you got your money’s worth.
Any more ink in the near future for you?

I’d say, the way to go about becoming a tattoo artist would be through an apprenticeship, which i am trying to gain right now, but the artist i’m interested in apprenticing under currently has 2 other apprentices under her wing right now so i’ll have to keep drawing and hanging around the tattoo shop until my time has come.

I wouldn’t mind buying a tattoo gun and kit and going ahead and tattooing on some grapefruit/oranges/bananas or something like that, to start getting an early feel for it before i even start an apprenticeship, but i’m far from comfortable doing skin until i’ve completed, at minimum a year of apprenticing under an actual acredited tattoo artist.

Just a suggestion, i mean, you could obviously go ahead and buy a kit and start doing stuff right off… but you’d gain alot more through an apprenticeship.

Welcome to the forum though, i’m a total n00b aswell…

Thanks alot guys, my digital camera recently broke, so it will be a little while before i can get any pictures up unfortunately.
But thanks again, it’s good to be on a forum with great art… i’ve already seen dozens of inspiring pieces on here.

Lookin’ like a pretty sweet sleeve, the color work is pretty nice on it… Any story behind it? or is it more just something you enjoy the look of?

That’s a pretty nice piece, i like the minimal look too when it’s done properly, such as in this case. As much of a fan of color i am, i like a nice black and grey piece. So it took 2 and a half hrs huh? If it’s not asking too much, how much did a piece that size run you? because i’m thinking of a pretty good sized piece for my ribs, and i know the price will vary but just wondering.

thanks man, and again, nice piece.

The colors are great in my openion, looks like some pretty good work, From a fan of the tattooing art standpoint, rather than an artists standpoint, i think they’re great…. i just don’t have any tattooing experience to give any other point of view. But i do draw alot, and even as drawings these would be impressive peices.

Good work.
